AITA for getting one of the kids a pastry when the other is diabetic?

r/

My(19) mom recently reconnected with two of her friends from university. They have one son each. ‘John’(12) and ‘Alex’(13).

Our moms decided to go on a trip to a seaside city and took us with them. One day, they asked me to take John and Alex for the evening while they have some drinks. I took them to a restaurant and we had dinner. Then I asked if they wanted dessert. John asked for a cream cheese fruit danish but Alex said he can’t have dessert since he’s diabetic. I ordered the danish for John.

When we went back and our moms came back, mine asked if I spent a lot. I told her just three dishes and one dessert. Alex’s mom said I shouldn’t have put her son in a situation where we had to watch another kid have something he can’t have.

Obviously she should have told you Alex was diabetic before you took him out to dinner! WFT? He could have ordered and eaten ANYTHING and you wouldn’t know it was a problem. If you knew he was diabetic you wouldn’t have offered dessert! NTA.

Diabetic kids can’t expect the whole world to skip treats for their sake

NTA. For a start, you should have been informed about Alex’s diabetes and how to manage it, even if he is 13 seems able to take care of himself. You were not given the information you needed to safely care for him. Secondly, life’s all about dealing with unequal/unfair situations. Everybody else’s life doesn’t have to go on hold because one person unfortunately has a chronic condition.
