AITA for having a late night shower?

r/

I am staying with Nan for the next couple of days and it has been really cold of a night.
I woke up at I think 11pm and I was both cold and trying to shake off a nightmare.
So I decided to have a shower. It was ten minutes at the most.
I was drying myself off when I heard my Nan say angrily: “It’s about time you turned the water off.” She then said I had woken everyone up.
I didn’t think it would wake her up. She’s a heavy sleeper.
So am I the asshole?

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:

    > 1. I had a shower late. (Which I am used to doing without bothering people.)
    2. I had the shower very late at night, thinking it was okay but it apparently woke Nan.

NTA you didn’t know, but you would be if you did it again now you do

NAH. You didn’t think the shower would wake anyone up, so you just made a mistake. Unfortunately, you did, so I can understand why your grandmother was irritated. It’s a lesson learned. Hopefully, you can both move on.

Shower’s echo loudly through the house, especially when it’s quiet. Just apologize and move on.

NTA The same people that whine about late night showers won’t give a second thought to waking up people up with an early shower

Not knowing your grandma’s set up, it’s difficult to judge her proximity to the bathroom and the noise she may hear from water pipes. But it seems like a very odd thing to do in another person’s home. Why couldn’t you grab an extra blanket?

It’s not about the shower. It’s about the cost of water. NYA, but your nan might be on a fixed income and increases in monthly bills might be an issue…or a perceived issue.

Showing late night is annoying if others can hear it, but there’s nothing necessarily rude about it. I’d say chalk this one off to old people are grouchy and wash your face with a warm washcloth next time. When my wife gets cold at night, she throws a beach towel in the dryer for 5 minutes and wraps it around herself. Don’t do this if the laundry room is near Nan’s bedroom!

    Nta but nobody is!
You didn’t know it would bother her, showers generally sound like a peaceful rain to me. Some people are just hyper sensitive and light sleepers and get really cranky when they’re tired! Now you know haha, maybe draw a bath before she sleeps if you’re more of a night owl. I used to love baths at my grandmas during sleepovers 🤍

NTA, Nan is just being grumpy. I’ve literally never heard of someone getting so mad about someone taking a shower late at night. My husband is currently showering with the door open & it’s very relaxing to listen to as I lay in bed.

NAH – Maybe the pipes make a bit of noise near her room or something. You were not to know. I think maybe she didn’t need to get irritated but I also understand being woken up isn’t nice. Next time maybe try a hot water bottle

NAH now you kno not to do it next time

In-laws, the house had a 6 bedrooms. The only room couldn’t hear everything that happened in the house was the kitchen. So, a shower awakened everyone.

NTA. Your Nan is just grumpy because she is probably scared to shower and she is bitter.

NTA for not knowing that showering would be too noisy for her. Just promise it won’t happen again and peace!

I think some people are misunderstanding… If grandma‘s house is older, the PIPES tend to make quite a bit of noise when water rushes through them, -they groan. It can be really loud.
