AITA for moving my neighbor’s bike out of my doorway?

r/

I live in a small apartment building with four units. Last week, my upstairs neighbor started storing their bike in the hallway right in front of my door. Its blocking my way and I’ve already tripped over it twice. I asked them politely to move it, and they said it’s just temporary but it’s still there a week later. I moved it against the wall so I could pass, and now they are mad at me for touching their property. AITA?

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:

    > i touched someone else property without there permission even though it was blocking my doorway

NTA The threshold to your apartment isn’t a bike rack. If your neighbor doesn’t want people to touch their bike maybe they should find somewhere to store it other than a communal hallway. Oh, I don’t know, maybe their apartment.

  4. dalitane Avatar

They’re the ones leaving their stuff in a shared hallway, so they can’t be upset when someone moves it to make space. That’s just common sense

  5. SalaudChaud Avatar

They are lucky you are a well adjusted person who hasn’t acted out of anger and, say, removed a couple of links from the chain, or greased the brake pads, loosened the saddle, removed the valve cores, halved the tire pressure, or made the bike disappear (none of which I am advocating). NTA

If they don’t move it immediately contact your landlord. This is a safety hazard in the case of a fire.

  7. k23_k23 Avatar

Move it so that it is blocking THEIR door, not yours. NTA

    What a ridiculous double standard!

Move their bike so it’s right in front of their door.

    NTA

Report the obstruction to your leasing office. If they do nothing, contact the fire marshall. It’s a safety hazard. NTA

How in the whole entire world would you be the asshole?

Not only are they causing you a daily inconvenience, they’re also creating a fire hazard. The hallway is not a place for storing personal property. If they want to keep it in the building, they can keep it in their personal unit.

Sounds like its abandoned, might as well throw it in the dumpster

NTA. First of all, blocking your doorway is illegal as it’s a fire hazard. Secondly, let them put the bike in front of their door.

Did I mention it was a fire hazard. You could report them to the fire department which would solve the entire problem.

Are you in the US? If so, call the fire marshal, no matter where the bike is in the hallway.

  14. Helen_A_Handbasket Avatar

Take photos every time it happens, and keep moving it to block their door.

NTA, but consider why you are allowing this person’s misplaced anger to affect your mood.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a temporary inconvenience or a permanent one; it’s not reasonable.

Instead of worrying over whether YTA, respond with a vague “I’ve had to move it twice. You might be unhappy with the outcome if I have to do it a third time”. Let their fertile imagination fill in the blanks so *they* start worrying over *your* reaction.

NTA. The bike may be their property but it’s in a communal area. You’re allowed move an obstruction.

  17. Ting-a-lingsoitgoes Avatar

Cool leave it there again and I’m gunna push it to the curb.

As a life long, active cyclist with more bikes than space, I would expect nothing less.

  18. MomentJ Avatar

Lol, are you the Ahole? NTA 100%. Obviously. Put the bike in their doorway.

  19. Medusa_7898 Avatar

It’s def a fire hazard. Contact your landlord.

  20. Putrid_Performer2509 Avatar

NTA. I’d reach out to the building management though. If you injure yourself, they could be liable, not to mention that’s a safety hazard in case of a fire.

  21. GigiML29 Avatar

NTA. I’m pretty sure its in your lease that nothing can be stored in the hallway anyways – its against the fire code. The neighbor is a big AH for doing that to you. Tell them you wouldn’t have touched their bike if it wasn’t obstructing your entrance, if they keep it out of your way you won’t have to touch it.

  22. Fearless-Ad-5702 Avatar

I agree with everyone else who says put it in front of their door.

  23. Jmac_files Avatar

Place the bike in front of their own door.

  24. EnterpriseGate Avatar

Call the maintenance guy and he can throw it in the dumpster, if they do it again.

  25. Prestigious-Use4550 Avatar

NTA. Move it on front of their door so they can trip over it.

  26. DawgMom67 Avatar

I would have put it right in front of their door , so they walked into it.

  27. TeachBS Avatar

Maybe bring it in the house and see if they prefer that it disappears. Or put a sign on it that says “free bike” and put it in front of the building. May want to let them know that if someone hurts themselves trying to get around it, they could be in deep shit. Send certified letter. Self centered jerks.

  28. Bittybellie Avatar

NTA. If they can’t put it somewhere safe toss it outside

  29. SugarFrutti Avatar

NTA. My old neighbor did this with three bikes, landlord finally threw them in the dumpster after someone called the fire marshal. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

My neighbor began storing his shoes in the apartment building hallway. I sent him 2 notes that were ignored. I put his shoes a little further along the hallway so that he would get the idea that anyone could touch them. He did not care. So then I put his shoes on the fire stairs nearby and shut the door. This got them out of the hallway. The building manager promptly disposed of the shoes for being a fire hazard. My neighbor never left out his shoes again.

NTA My suggestion is to park the bikes on the fire stairs and close the door.
