AITA for not lending my mom a key

r/

My mother, brother and I all have things in a shed at my moms. She never locked it and said the neighborhood was fine, despite complaining when her car was broken into twice. Someone gave us 3 master locks with identical keys, so I’ve since (with her and brother agreeing) had one put on the shed, with us all agreeing to have a key. I have mine on a keychain, she refused to and put hers back in the lock and doesn’t know where it is now. She’s demanding I give her my key, so she can make more. I have refused, afraid she’ll lose it too and we won’t have access (my brother doesn’t know where his is either), but have told her I’d go with her to have it copied. She’s been violently upset with me saying that, and it in turn only upsets me as in my mind, it makes sense. Another issue in this is she never ever drives anywhere (long story short: she has some issues w the law and that ability) and so to get around that she always has someone else drive her, and never remembers anything.
I’m frustrated and stressed, AITA?

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:

    > 1) I refused to give my mom a key.
    2) I do not know if I’m being too mean or stressing too much.

NTA, she acts irresponsibly overall it would seem.

Of all the stupid posts. Have a key made and drop it off. As of now you are the only person who has one. What would you do if you lost it. How could you have thought of this on your own!

Also give that key to her on a keychain.

Your offer to make her a copy is very reasonable. I’d just go make a copy and hand it to her personally.

NTA, just make the replacement key yourself, and make 3 spares.

NTA. This is a complete mess. First, your mom likely didn’t lose the key in a traditional sense. It was likely stolen considering your mother promptly took her key and put it and left it in the lock. Someone who had access to the area likely felt it was an opportunity. I would check to make sure at least your things are still there. I would also go ahead and make plans to remove all your items from that shed. I would also suggest to your brother he do the same, because making a copy of the key, or even simply getting a new lock is going to result in the same thing: your mother will put the key in the lock and leave it there, then we repeat ad nauseum.

You say she is no longer permitted to drive, and that she never remembers anything. Have you had her mental acuity checked? It sounds like it may be high time she is in an assisted living facility or at least have caregivers for at least 12 hours a day.

NTA. It makes total sense to not hand over your only working key when she already lost hers. Offering to go with her to copy it is honestly super reasonable, she’s just mad cause she messed up and wants to make it your fault. She’s sooo dramatic lol

Have 3 spares made- keep a “Master” in the house.

Info- why can’t you just get a combination lock? They’re not that expensive. Though I suppose it’s possible your mom will write the combination on the door…

Maybe get your stuff out of her shed and wash your hands of it.
