I (19F) don’t want to cover my coworker’s (~22?M) shift, for context we work at a pizza place, both as counters. He just messaged me saying he’s not feeling good asking me to work his closing shift, not sure if he’s actually sick but thats what I’m assuming. I know I should be a team player but this dude kinda annoys me by watching me struggle with customers while he sits on his phone and doesn’t do his work. Stuff like that makes my supervisor mad at me because she comes into work finding nothing has been restocked because this dude doesn’t do jack shit sometimes. I was going to see a movie with my family tonight and I think they bought tickets already but I just feel guilty. Not that I would tell him my plans but still. Plus my work is also kinda short staffed.
I kinda feel like I would be an asshole for saying no while either he is working while sick or someone else has to cancel their possibly important plans because I’m watching a movie.
AITA?

NTA. Everything else aside, you already have plans. That’s all that really matters in this situation.
It’s the manager’s job to manage schedules.
If you want to pick up hours, great. If you don’t want to – that’s on the manager to solve.
NTA. Everyone is replaceable in a job. This isn’t your shift; therefore, it’s not your problem.
If he’s always slacking off and making you look bad, you don’t owe him your free time. Plans with family are important too. He can deal with the consequences of his own choices.
NTA. You have plans already. Say sorry you can’t, and hopefully, he can work something out with either management or himself.
People love when it goes around, hate when it comes around. Massive NTA.
NTA.
Say you’re out and can’t do it. Honestly you don’t even owe him a text if you don’t feel like it.
>Stuff like that makes my supervisor mad at me because she comes into work finding nothing has been restocked because this dude doesn’t do jack shit sometimes.
Don’t accept the blame if it’s not your fault. This needs to stop.
NTA “Sorry, I’m not available, but thanks for offering. Hope you feel better soon.” Clear, polite and professional. And copy in a supervisor or manager if you can, just to cover your ass.
As to you getting chewed out for not keeping up when dude works with you, have a private chat with a manager. Explain that you know work isn’t getting done, but when a supervisor isn’t on site dude spends a lot of time on his phone and you are essentially working alone. You know serving customers is the priority, and that leaves you with little time for anything else. Nicely ask the manager for suggestions. Would they like you to step away from the counter when you see dude is on the phone, and tell the manager so you can focus on other tasks and he must take care of customers?
Another option when dude won’t get off his phone, find any excuse to call a manager over to help you with something so they see him on his phone. Then, if it isn’t super busy you can ask the manager if one of you should step away from the counter to do your other assigned tasks. Helps the manager hold dude accountable for, you know, earning his paycheck.
NTA – Why should you inconvenience yourself to help out someone who is lazy and never does his job, therefore makes your job harder? Why?
Management will never know what kind of employee he is — if you keep covering for him. Stop doing his work too.
