Guys I am so tired. I 28M am having an argument with my mother who I live with 56F, and it largely involves her religious beliefs, regarding videogames I play.
TLDR, my mother is very heavy into Christian Studies and is going to school for it, but I used to think she had an understanding that I personally had no real beliefs much like hers. So we just each stayed in our lanes with living together. However due to a messy family situation involving my Nana (Dad’s Mom). Who is having her mental health decline recently especially regarding her faith, my mom has really been invested in prayer and biblical studies alot more.
Cut to yesterday and she comes up to me saying something like Nana is currently under attack by a a familial spirit and it represents a family curse on our blood line. And we need to cast out any chance of demons or evil spirits coming into our house. She then tells me to go through my videogames and get rid of the ones representing any witchcraft, magic, or evil demonic forces and she would pay me for every thing I got rid of.
While I was a bit surprised I really think that the only games in my collection that fit that very specific agenda were Dead by Daylight, and Resident Evil 4 Remake (big stretch i know). Well unfortunately that wasn’t enough.
My mother has then said that any game I play that involves using magic of any sort needs to go and that is a big problem for me. I really like RPGs and have alot in my library of games. For example Final Fantasy 10, Tales of Vesperia, Final Fantasy 7 Remake/ Rebirth, Persona, and most recently Expedition 33. I no joke would be losing about 85% of my game library if I went through with this nonsense. So I simply told her no i am not giving those up.
As expected she didn’t like that and said that “we invoke negative spirits through media we are not aware of so it harms the family by those games being outlet for the bad spirts to get into our home.” So embracing my hobbies and playing games i like is causing a family curse? Yeah okay mom.
I again refused and she is basically saying that we need to involve ourselves with God so he can protect our family. I grow rather bitter towards God over the years because of this mindset, but I think me completing forsaking my interests and hobbies for a supposed family curse is just a ridiculous ask.
So Reddit AITA for saying No to giving my videogames?

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> 1: Refusing to give up my videogames involving any magic because my mother believes that the magic representation will have a family curse on us.

NTA…but time to get your own place. Even rent a room elsewhere.
Why on earth are you not wanting to start a life? This sounds like a 15 year old’s problem.
NTA – sounds like your mom is really trying to take advantage of a sad situation to spread her dogma and assert her authority
Ok, first of all NTA of course.
But secondly, which part of her beliefs are even Christian? She’s obsessing about “family curses” and “negative spirits”? If I were Christian I think I’d say those are quite heathen ideas?
Definitely NTA seems a bit silly
Sounds like it’s time to move out, friend. Mom’s house, mom’s rules. NAH
NTA but you need to either move out or do what your mom says.
The things she are saying don’t even sound like Christian theology though. I think your mother is mentally ill.
NTA But I would calculate how much each of those games cost and total it and see if she’s still willing to pay because games are EXPENSIVE and I feel like she doesn’t realize that.
NTA
Download 7 days to die and kill some zombies until this blows over.
NTA. I thought this sort of thing went out of fashion about 25 years ago.
NTA. Your mom needs mental health intervention, though.
NTA but the hell classes is she taking? I must admit that I’m a bit skeptical that the local college is hosting a seminar called, “Drive the devil’s videogames out of your household lest your family incur a curse.”
Nta but it is her house so her rules. If they are unrealistic or insane (which they seem to be) then your only option is to move. I do have to give her credit for offering to compensate you though… I wouldn’t have expected that.
NTA
Sounds like your mom could be experiencing religious psychosis and needs some professional help. But I agree with other commenters that it’s time to get your own place and escape that environment so you can do what you want
NTA
Get a safe and put your games in there. She’s gonna find a way to get rid of em regardless if you want her to or not, thats just how it is with evangelical parents. In her mind its your video games that is stopping nana from being healed due to “the evil inhabiting them”. It is nice that she’s offering to pay you back though, my mom never did when she went through my stuff like that.
Theists believe in imaginary “gods” and talking fucking snakes. You need to move the fuck out.
NTA
Your more however is bat shit insane.
Yea, I have to read the part in the bible about familial spirits causing dementia and will get back to you.
I have worked as clergy and I used to write/research theological texts. None of that makes sense based on any doctrine I’ve researched. I also play a lot of video games, mostly survival crafting (Palworld and Dune are what I’m playing now). You are at a difficult point. It’s her house. Telling her no could, in theory, jeopardize your living situation if she really believes this. Moving out night be the best option for you.
If you are concerned about your mom, look into who she is paying for what and what they’re asking of her. I was raised in the thick of cultist evangelical stuff (Shiny Happy People season 2, for example. I still can’t remember all the things that happened to me there). A lot of it is rooted in control.
Ask her to show you chapter and verse in the Bible where it says all this stuff.
Protip (literally lol): if she throws the verse “do not suffer a witch to live” she is in some bogus stuff. That translation was wrong and a more accurate version is “do not suffer a snake oil salesman to live.” During tat period in time there were people selling literal poison to people,so the death sentence makes sense. Much of the Bible is basically an idiots guide to not dying
NTA but your mom is experiencing religious psychosis as a means to cope with hard times.
You’re 28 years old living at home playing video games? Time to grow up and move out.
NTA
stop living with your mom.
Wait – how does she know you even have these games? If she just saw the title she couldn’t know what they’re even about.
>she comes up to me saying something like Nana is currently under attack by a a familial spirit and it represents a family curse on our blood line. And we need to cast out any chance of demons or evil spirits coming into our house.
This is not Christian theology. Is your mother studying at a reputable school? This sounds really weird and cult-like. It’s making me think of Voodoo.
NTA
> My mother has then said that any game I play that involves using magic of any sort needs to go and that is a big problem for me.
You’re 28. In any jurisdiction I’m aware of, your mother’s commentary carries the same weight as that of randos on the internet. You’re an adult.
Based on what you’ve described, I’d question her mental health, but whatever… you’re an adult, you don’t need to listen to, follow, or otherwise support the ravings of a Jesus-addled mind.
I hope you don’t live under her roof. If you do, I suggest changing that situation much sooner than later. First comes the curses and evil spirits, and not long after comes the murdering the demons out of you. The kind of religion you’re talking about is the dangerous kind.
In the short term, you need to lock those games up or otherwise protect them, because there’s few people more resourceful and destructive than a Christian hunting magic demons.
Sounds like she doesn’t understand the concept of a “story”.
I mean Expedition 33 may cause damage… but it’s emotional damage.
NTA and make sure she doesn’t throw them out when you’re not around.
NTA – it’s unfair and unreasonable to expect you to give up your property because of her religious beliefs.
From a paranormal standpoint, it’s also not going to have any affect. That’s not how these thing work.
My mom is bipolar and apostolic. She’s had manic episodes that sound a lot like that.
Is there any chance you can live somewhere else? This isn’t going to be something you can fix.
At 28, you shouldn’t be living under your mother’s thumb, especially since she’s whacky. Keep your games, and keep them safe, even if it means a new strong lock on your door. Or getting your own place, which would probably be best for you. NTA.
NTA, one cannot argue with someone who is fanatically religious, they are people with a lot of ego and little intelligence. Better to move out and avoid talking to your mother, if you are a Christian remind your mother that women do not have the right to teach men.
NTA. My mom and aunt were just like this growing up. I literally had to excuse myself from music class in middle school because they were showing Fantasia, and I wasn’t allowed to see it because Mickey was a sorcerer’s apprentice. And they wondered why I became an atheist 🙄
Lmao you have Persona, a game where you can literally control and fight alongside Satan, Lucifer, and a monster made of penises and yet your first guess was resident evil.
I know that’s not what you asked but I just couldn’t pass that up.
NTA on the rest.
I don’t think you know what TLDR means. NTA though
Sounds like the hours I’ve sunk into Skyrim would really upset your family…
NTA and from your post history, I’d say there’s almost no way she can afford to pay you for all these games anyway. Honestly, OP, you and your brother should consider getting your own place. I hate telling people “just move out” but if the two of y’all are already supporting the household without her, and she still is this controlling at y’all’s ages, it’s just going to get worse from here.
NTA but sounds like it’s beyond time for you to move out.
NTA sounds like your mom is watching one too many “priest exorcises demons” tiktoks, she may need a mental health check up and an intervention.
NTA. Do you have any friends you could get as roommates? Because in my experience she is not gonna get saner from this point on. r/QAnonCasualties may be enlightening
No? You’re 28 dude, your mom has no right to your personal belongings. I’d get a safe and put them there or leave them with a friend or something though, she might throw them out anyway.
Tell her you’ll get rid of all your stuff that has magic, demons, the devil, witches, etc in it when she gets rid of hers. When she argues she doesn’t have that stuff, tell her that her bible is full of it.
NTA, keep your games. There’s nothing wrong with them.
Nta , get some blank CD and put them in the case’s then sell those to her.
NTA but (zero judgement, shit’s expensive now) your 28, move out of your mom’s house😀 Guaranteed you’re gonna come home one day and find most of your stuff gone, probably burned if she’s that fanatical. Until then, get a good lock. Hope things work out.
Nta.
NTA. Your mom sounds batshit insane
My guy you’re 28. Twenty-eight. NTA obviously.
NTA but bro, just lie to her. By some blank dvds, toss those out and LIE. Lie lie lie lie your ass off she don’t deserve the truth
At age 28 you should be able to play any video game you want- and also move out. Your mom can have her feelings about whatever, but it’s also her house. I’ve always believed the one paying the bills makes the rules of the house. Just my .02 I play the same games
Stupid is dangerous. Also expensive. Avoid it at all costs.
You need to get the hell away from all these lunatics before it gets worse.
NTA, but I feel like you could have either pretended to get rid of some games or gotten rid of a couple unwanted games and got some money, depending on how thorough she would be with checking. I feel like you could tell her any game has witchcraft in it and she wouldn’t know better.
Direct response: “Hey, if you really think this is a demonic possession, we should call the Catholic Church. They have a specific office of Exorcist that most other religions will refer you to. Only a catholic priest can perform an exorcism and laypeople should not attempt it.”
If she pushes back, then you can push back that she doesn’t actually believe it is as serious as she claims. If she relents and does call the Church, they’ll tell her she’s crazy and demonic possessions don’t work like that.
INFO: Do you pay market rent for your living space, and pay your own living expenses?
Isn’t it sooo crazy that’s she’s paying real money to be taught a bunch of lies? What a world lol.
Go buy the Harry Potter book collection, Hogwarts legacy, and a wizard wand. Wrap them all and gift them to her.
