My younger brother just go his bachelors in biology and he started medical school. My dad sent him a picture of the degree since out of state, Saying can’t wait for a real degree. My dad has a bachelors in engineering but he never used it, and works as a truck driver.
I asked him why he said that to my brother since a bachelors in biology is a good degree. He said that it was worthless and until he becomes a doctor it doesn’t matter. I said to him that it’s not worthless and he can literally work full time at a lab right now if he wants too. He kept saying that it’s not worth shit. I told him that his degree is worth less because biology is harder than engineering and since he didn’t use his degree he’s the one with the worthless degree.
He got his feeling hurt and said why would you say that to me. Called me disrespectful and ungrateful. Lmaoo am I tweaking?

ESH. That was a terrible thing for your dad to say to your brother as he’s clearly highly intelligent and going to be very accomplished. It does sound like he probably is jaded from his own experience and feels (not entirely incorrectly, to be honest) that bachelor’s degrees don’t always pay off for what you put into them.
That being said, your reaction was out of line. At the end of the day, it really isn’t your business. You don’t mention how your brother felt about the comment either. Maybe they joke around like that and he didn’t take it negatively. Also, as someone who studied biology undergrad myself…engineering is definitely harder and absolutely NOT worthless lmao. In fact, I’d recommend someone go into engineering over medicine in today’s world.
NTA
If brother can only get into medical school with the degree, then it’s not worthless (setting aside the truth he can have a good career with it alone).
you don’t get an opinion on things if you live under his roof and don’t pay any rent.
NTA.
Your dad sounds like he’s kind of just a bully. Neither one of you need that shit in your life. I would put as much distance there as possible. These people don’t change unless there is palpable consequence.
To be fair, there aren’t a lot of things you can do with a biology degree but it isn’t useless. You have to have the piece of paper but make opportunities for yourself. People get into healthcare if they work in healthcare. People get into conservation if they work in conservation. Labs. Breweries. Inspection. Public health. Water treatment and sanitation. Product manufacturing. Lots of things.
You can’t just get them with the degree like a golden ticket. You have to have experiences that make you qualified for that job—- and that’s all up to the student.
You also don’t need a bio degree for med school, so that suggestion is sort of an exaggeration.
(I have a BS in bio and a current med student)
Well, then his degree is worth shit as well because he obviously couldn’t get into the field that he got his degree in. There are a number of different fields you can get into through biology. NTA tell him to get a job in his field or stop telling people he has a degree because it’s useless.
