AITA for telling my parent to not turn on the fridge?

r/

For context I live with my grand mother , have been since a kid, and my parent moved in later on.
I am 23 she is 50, I do plan to move out soon. This post is not about that. Just context on the situation
So we just got a fridge due to the old one breaking on us. We where told we needed to wait an hour before attempting to switch it on.

Parent was not there for this information. She asked my gran why it wasnt on, she told her it must wait an hour. I said it can only be put on at 12:30. It was 11:30.
She depight this attempted to plug it in and start it up to early. I told her again ” please don’t switch it on intell 12:30″
She said I can’t do that as she’s leaving the house now for somthing. Again attempted to do it again.
Told her I could do it, I read the manual and it needs to wait till 12:30.

She then proceeded to yell at me saying” I am not a moron” “fuck off” and ” your such an asshole”

Was I really an asshole? I just wanted to make sure we don’t break the new fridge. My gran can’t afford another one.

This isn’t the first time she’s yelled at me over something like this.
I want to know if I am the asshole. So that I can make sure I dont do it again. As, I don’t want tension for my grand mother.

    > I feel I could be the asshole as I shouldn’t of told my parent what to do. That I disrespected her

Did the manual specify the reason for the wait?

Edit to add: shows how often I interact with new fridges. Apparently having to wait an hour before turning one on is pretty standard. I’m assuming that one must wait additional time for the fridge to get to temperature before placing food items inside.

My judgement definitely stands. Thanks everyone for teaching me something new today.

NTA she sounds like she’s just having a day, just try to give her grace & hopefully it’ll pass. Sometimes you can’t reason with people, but deff nta

NTA for wanting to follow the proper installation for the new fridge, but you are all TA for living off of your grandmother.

You mentioned that your grandmother couldn’t afford a new fridge?? How come there are 3 adults living there but only one contributes to something as essential as a new fridge??

NTA and your parent is being a big ol baby. It’s extremely immature of her to shout at you because you were doing the responsible thing and trying not to break a very expensive purchase. Considering this isn’t the first time she’s done something like this, your parent clearly has issues with acting like an adult, understanding the word “no”, and respecting you and your gran.

No, your parent is actually stupid.

NTA – You were taking the right steps. Maybe your mom didn’t know the refrigerant needed to settle. She was very rude and inappropriate to cuss you out. It’s good you’ll be removing yourself from her abuse. I hope she doesn’t treat your grandma the way she talked to you.

NTA. that’s literally what parenting the parent means in action

NTA, it’s normal to let a fridge settle before plugging in.

It’s not normal to shout at your kid and call them names because they correct you when you do something wrong.

You’re NTA. Your mother was deliberately ignoring explicit instructions for no good reason.

Is she one of those stubborn people who thinks anyone younger than she cannot possibly know something she doesn’t know?

It is important to leave your fridge to settle after moving to protect the appliance’s internal parts and to ensure that the fridge continues to work to maximum efficiency. When moving a fridge, the compressor oil can leak into the refrigeration system, causing a blockage if the appliance is turned on too quickly. The oil in a refrigerator protects the appliance’s parts, working to ensure that the appliance does not break down or deteriorate when in constant use. By leaving your fridge to settle, you can ensure that the compressor oil returns to its original position, preventing damage to your appliance in the process.

TIL that my delivery and installation technician may have messed-up my new refrigerator this past August when they plugged it in and turned it on before leaving with the old fridge. At first, this sounded like the advice of not swimming for two hours after eating. But apparently, it’s solid advice to let everything settle down before starting a new refrigerator. NTA

Your mom is definitely TA. There’s no reason to speak to anyone like this, especially your own child, over the situation you’ve described. You didn’t do anything wrong but I don’t know what your mom’s problem is.

Nta. Your parent is acting like a child. Embarrassing for them but not your fault.

NTA. Apparently she is an AH for not understanding the clear instruction.
