AITA: I refused to give my sister a Nirvana shirt for her school’s spirit week.

r/

In case you don’t know what spirit week is, it is a week where each day is a themed “dress-up” day for school. My younger sister (12), wanted to borrow my Nirvana shirt because tomorrow is “Rapper” day. She said she wanted to borrow my Nirvana shirt because it’s “gangsta” and “looks like it’s from the hood”. I then educated her on how Kurt Cobain and Nirvana was not “gangster” and how disrespectful that was, her response being “I don’t give a fuck” and “just give me the shirt”. I offered an actual rap shirt (Public Enemy), but she started crying because i didn’t give her the shirt and she stormed out of my room. I then got scolded by my parents for not giving my sister the shirt, and I was forced to give my shirt to her. Is it that deep, or AITA?

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:

    > 1. Not giving my sister the Nirvana shirt.
    2. Because she really wanted to use it for spirit week.

NTA. And your parents should not have forced you to share something that’s yours. It’s too bad that she didn’t want the actual rapper shirt that you offered. Oh well.

NTA IF you had not said anything and she got made fun of for it, they would have been upset with you. My parents would have laughed at me for trying to wear a nirvana shirt with that theme. Seems like they may cater to her ?

I mean, she is 12 and she is wrong to think its a better shirt to wear over a PE shirt so NTA.

NTA. Imagine showing up to “Rapper Day” in a Nirvana shirt. That’s like showing up to pajama day in a tuxedo. You saved her from embarrassing herself tbh

Nta, but still dont think its that deep, you could have just handed her the shirt and educate afterwards which would be the best outcome most likely, when I was a child I didn’t know about genres much as well which is completely normal but again its not that deep in my opinion

I absolutely, positively, cannot stand Nirvana and think Kurt is one of the most overrated individuals in the history of music. That said, if you let your sister wear that shirt for a Rapper day she would be all sorts of ridiculed, whereas wearing a Public Enemy shirt would be old school and mad respect.

NTA but your parents are , making you to lend something against your will like that. I would be interested to know what reception your Nirvana shirt got when she announced it was ‘gangsta‘ lol. Not that l am happy about little kids thinking gangster stuff is fun and parents for accepting that.

Your parents know very well that Nirvana is not a rapper. They are surely Gen X or MAYBE Millennial. Why are they so lax in their daughter’s education? NTA.

NTA – but just for the facts of the case (it’s your shirt, you can do with it what you want). However, if you include nuance, YTA. First, it’s a shirt. And unless it’s signed by nirvana, it’s silly. 2nd, Cobain was the ultimate gangsta. He was so against the establishment he shot himself. Doesn’t get much more gangsta than that.

    NTA. Cherish those shirts.

Your sister isn’t entitled to your shirt. And your parents are wrong for forcing you to let your sister borrow that shirt.
