So hi I have a unique situation I need help in. So I (22F) and my husband (25M) live with my FIL and MIL. My husband up until Saturday worked with my FIL for his business in reglazing. I say up until Saturday because the morning of that day my FIL woke my husband up accusing him of not reading some labels on cans of paint correctly. He said that because my husband didn’t read them correctly it would be my husband’s fault if my FIL messed up his job. My husband corrected him and explained that he hasn’t touched any cans of paint at all in the past few weeks and the only one that was touching them was him (My FIL). My FIL accused my husband of painting him as stupid and threatened his job then hung up.
Later that day my FIL got home and fired my husband because, “it was better for everyone’s mental health.” And that was that. That isn’t my issue.
My issue is that since last year work has been slow and my in laws have fallen in to debt. Even with us. They don’t pay us correctly because they have been battling on getting paid. We let it slide because we are family and because my husband at least had a job. But now not only did he fire my husband but he of course did not provide a check for all that is owed. (It’s around 2000 or so but still) and to top it all off he wants us to pay him 800 in rent by Tuesday. But how can we pay rent if he can’t pay us?
So my question here is, should I withhold rent until they give us our money? Or should I give them whatever is left in our savings to pay rent and continue to wait until they pay us the full amount they owe.
(By the way it took my MIL a whole month to pay us for one week worth of work)
Also I don’t need anyone telling me to move out. Clearly we know we have to but with the fact my son just got diagnosed with autism we have been paying a pretty penny for his insurance and paying off our debts of accrued interests because my in laws only pay us maybe 200 to 300 every two weeks or so.
Also to those wondering we live in an “at will” state so my FIL as unfair as it may sound was in his full right to fire my husband even if it was because he was frustrated that he messed up and he couldn’t pin the blame on my husband. But even so he legally had to provide us a check when he fired my husband or 72 hours after. And on Tuesday his 72 hours are up, and we know for a fact they won’t he able to pay us all that they owe.

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:
> I feel I might be in the wrong because home life and work life are two separate things. And it’s our obligation as tenants to pay rent. But my conflict is that our landlord is also our employer and if he can’t pay us how will we have the money to pay him?

NTA but your in laws are. Don’t pay rent and if they threaten to kick you out, tell them to go thru the court system along with reporting them to the Dept of Labor. Good luck, your situation is awful.
NTA just say or better write that he can deduct rent from his check
Also you know that they will escalate!
Is this a real story?
There’s no way someone would choose to have a kid while in debt and living at their parents place, right?
This is a legal question. You don’t pay rent and you can be evicted. One situation has nothing to due with the other. How mad is FIL and will he kick you out?
Pay the rent, call the Department of labor and speak to wage an hour and open up a claim. Your husband will get paid. You will not get evicted for nonpayment of rent.
” should I withhold rent until they give us our money?” .. DO that – NO further money from you to them until your husband is paid in full.
“And on Tuesday his 72 hours are up, and we know for a fact they won’t he able to pay us all that they owe.” .. if he makes ANY troule about rent, tell him: He needs to pay, or you will sue and FIL will be reported for wage theft.
Father-in-law owes your husband $2,000, which gives you two and a half months rent-free to find a new place to live. Just tell father-in-law he can withdraw that $800 a month rent out of the $2000 he owes you.
Is this real? A lot of the text here doesn’t provide essential information. INFO: Did you have any past bouts with your MIL or FIL? They aren’t going to pay you the full amount, by the way.
