I 22F and currently renting a small apartment with a roommate, “Kelsey” (23F). We were friends-of-friends before moving in, and I thought she was chill. That changed real fast.
One of the first things I noticed was how fast my shampoo kept disappearing. I use a nice color-safe brand that isn’t cheap, and it would be half gone after a week even though I only wash my hair every few days. I asked Kelsey politely if she was using it, and she swore up and down that she wasn’t. Gaslighting 101.
So I did a little test. I bought a cheap bottle of generic shampoo and left it in the shower while hiding my actual one in my room. Lo and behold, the cheap one remained untouched and my hidden bottle still vanished at an unnatural pace whenever I brought it back out. So yeah, she was lying.
Here’s where it gets petty.
I dye my hair a reddish-brown that needs upkeep, and I had a leftover bottle of purple color-depositing hair dye I used as a toner back when I tried going auburn. It’s semi-permanent and stains light hair easily. Kelsey has platinum blonde hair. I saw an opportunity.
I mixed a generous amount of the dye into my “special” shampoo and put it back in the shower. Then I waited.
Two days later, she stormed into my room looking like a My Little Pony character. Her hair had a noticeable lavender tint, especially around the front. She was freaking out, yelling that someone “sabotaged her beauty routine.”
I just blinked at her and said, “Weird, I thought you didn’t use my shampoo?”
She went silent. Then turned red (well, pink. Her hair was still purple.) and stomped off.
She’s still sulking and using the generic shampoo now. I didn’t apologize. I don’t feel bad. She keeps muttering about how she has a date next weekend and doesn’t know if she can get it toned out in time.
So, aitah?

NTA. She “assumed the risk” by using your shampoo.
ESH. Just tell her you know she’s been using it, to pay you back for it, and to stay out of your shit. And get a lock and key for your bedroom door.
NTA FAFO
Shampoo costs 7$ and lasts a month ESH
NTA. She fucked around and now she’s finding out the consequences to her actions
lmao NTA. You asked her repeatedly not to use your shampoo. She fucked around and found out.
