AITAH for telling my girlfriend we will break up if she points a gun at me?

r/

So for context, we were out drinking with her cousin and he had his gun on him. She asked for it and started waving it around, taking pictures, etc.

During this whole sequence, she waved it towards my direction numerous times, and every time I either moved my head or put it down with my hand. She was pretty drunk, so the next day I texted her that if she ever waved a gun in my direction again we will breakup on the spot.

I’m pretty big on gun safety so the whole situation just irritated me for the most part.

Edit: I didn’t know there was a gun in the car, if I knew beforehand, I definitely would’ve stayed home

Guns and alcohol are a terrible combination. NTA.

  2. ImAnNPCsoWhat Avatar

NTA. Break up with her anyway. Gun safety is paramount and the fact that she was so lax with it is unacceptable. She and her cousin who provided the firearm put everyone present and anyone walking by or sleeping nearby in danger.

    Edit: cousin not brother.

  3. AtlantaDave998 Avatar

NTA. Your girlfriend was a dangerous and drunk lunatic.

  4. Sea-Operation-6123 Avatar

I think you may need a stronger boundary… “if you ever touch a gun again when you’re drinking or ever point it at me for any reason, I will break up with you immediately.”

Also, don’t hang out with her cousin. Dude clearly should not own a gun. No one with half a brain cell is handing their weapon to the drunk girl.

eta – wait … your gf was waving a loaded weapon around in a car? So were y’all drinking & driving? Come on! Y’all need to be better.

  5. Single_Oven_819 Avatar

Emergency medicine Dr here. Guns are no joke. Tell her she needs to take a gun safety class or leave her ass immediately.

  6. Tasty-Ingenuity-4662 Avatar

You’re too generous. I wouldn’t even give her that second chance.

  7. Traditional-Swan-130 Avatar

Drunk or sober, waving a loaded weapon around is never a joke. You set a clear and fair boundary.

  8. TrickGarden6972 Avatar

These questions are dumb. WIBTA for breaking up with someone who has the potential to off me?

  9. cesarmob17 Avatar

Yo who tf do ya be fuckn dealing w man. I be thinking my love life is shitty. Ya over here dating gang bangers and whores

“Guns are cool, idiots, not so much. When you put those two things together, you may end up with what we call a Darwin Award!”

In all seriousness she is a complete idiot for what she did and her cousin should have known better to have his CCW (or i assume his ccw) on him while out drinking. Guns and alcohol may be controlled by the same bureau but that doesn’t mean they should be used together.

  11. Shot_Tie2761 Avatar

She’s a dumb ass. Kick her to the curb once you find a suitable replacement

  12. BAHGate Avatar

NTA and I would not wait until next time.

  13. SeraphiM0352 Avatar

Cousin is a fucking idiot for

    1. Being drunk while armed and letting another drink person play with it.

    Or

    1. Being sober and letting a drunk person play with a firearm.

You’re an idiot for not being firm the moment the safety violation happened. Especially if you are as big on safety as you claim.

Who gives a fuck if it kills the mood. Better than someone innocent being shot

  14. chaosrulz0310 Avatar

No just no. Her cousin shouldn’t have given a drunk person a gun so apparently he doesn’t need to own one either. You need to just leave that situation, guns are not toys to be passed around and used as props in photo shoots.

  15. Late-Hat-9144 Avatar

NTA, your boundary isn’t even the barest minimum you should be able to expect from your partner. Anyone who waves a gun towards their loved ones, should never touch a gun; don’t ever point your gun at someone unless you intend to shoot them.

Honestly, it would have been one and done for me, the moment she pointed the gun in my direction, end of the relationship; drunk or not, her behaviour is not ok… and is in fact even more dangerous because she is drunk.

  16. mintchan Avatar

are you dumb? saying that to the person who has been drinking holding gun? you could just leave and dumb her

  17. B1L1D8 Avatar

Some people have such a lack of respect for guns. Once you pull the trigger and that bullet hits someone, there is no going back. Most people see the small bullet holes in the front during films/movies, they don’t see the huge blowout hole in the back because of how terribly gruesome certain calibers can be.

NTA, why not break up now, no offense your gf is a giant moron and so is her family.

  18. T9Para Avatar

I bet her finger was inside the trigger guard, and there was a round chambered too !!!!!

  19. Gasguy9 Avatar

NTA If the gun was unloaded dumb. If it was loaded run.

  20. GreyGnome Avatar

Holy shit. NTA but she owes you an apology. And maybe a little awareness. And a little less booze.

Big red flags all around. I’m not saying break up today, I’m just a loser surfing the Internet from my couch, but be very careful.

  21. writing_mm_romance Avatar

Umm, next time might be too late my friend. She clearly isn’t safe with firearms. I’d bounce.

  22. perpetuallyxhausted Avatar

This is the most American thing I’ve ever read, even if you’re not American. How The ACTUAL fuck can you claim to give any shits about gun safety with what happened? Alcohol and guns don’t mix, even a little bit. Your line should not have been her pointing it at you, it should have been her picking it up at all when she’s drunk and probably hasn’t gone through any gun safety training.

  23. ActPositively Avatar

YTA. As soon as she flagged you once you should have immediately disarmed her all you have to do is grab her by the wrist to make sure the gun is pointed down or if you didn’t want to do that you could’ve just left. Still hanging around while she’s pointing guns at people even accidentally is crazy.

  24. DemonEyeWill Avatar

NTAH. It’s bad that she waved the gun in your direction, it’s even worse that she’s doing that drunk. She should understand that doing that could kill you or leave you badly injured.

  25. raucus_one Avatar

Everyone here has already said exactly what I was thinking. She and her brother are both a mess.

  26. TararaBoomDA Avatar

Don’t give her a next time. Dip out NOW.

  27. Ok_Stable7501 Avatar

Did you check to see if the safety was on and if it was loaded? Cause Annie Drunkly did not.

    NTA and dump her.

  28. mad2109 Avatar

She’s a fucking idiot. Edited to say for God’s sake, don’t procreate with stupid.

  29. ZinaVividist Avatar

Nope, not the AH. You didn’t overreact. You set a clear boundary after she crossed a serious line. Guns aren’t party props, and alcohol makes it 10x worse. Honestly, she should’ve apologized first.

  30. AlivePie2038 Avatar

She is as stupid and careless as Alec Baldwin.

  31. DevilsPredicate Avatar

NTA. But these people suggesting you break up over this are craaaazy.

You need to take her out before she takes you out.

  32. bakeacake45 Avatar

If she put those pictures on social media and YOU appear in any of them demand they be taken down. They will come back to haunt you.

  33. avid-learner-bot Avatar

NTA. Guns, they’re not toys. Especially not for waving around when you’ve had one too many. Been teaching my kid about gun safety since they were old enough to know better.

  34. One-Rip2593 Avatar

Alcohol? Yeah stay the f away from guns. But you are NTA. Someone playing with your life like that isn’t ok.

  35. Monsta-Hunta Avatar

I knew a kid who accidentally blasted himself in the head with a shotgun following heavy consumption. Don’t fuck with guns, especially when drunk.

  36. Astyryx Avatar

Break up now, she’s a careless idiot. And so is the cousin.

  37. FlashyHabit3030 Avatar

NTA. I would have broken up either way her then and there.

  38. michiganlatenight Avatar

You’re pretty big on gun safety but you’ll give her a pass THIS time she waved a gun at you…. Okay then.

  39. yapyap6 Avatar

Brandishing a firearm is a felony.

  40. Quiet_Village_1425 Avatar

    Dude just break up!!

  41. LobstahLovahRI Avatar

If I did that to my husband I’m positive I’d be served divorce papers.

  42. ObviousMessX Avatar

NTA for your specific question, no. That explanation though?! Don’t give her another chance with your life. Work on it on the phone or at breakfast in public maybe. You literally could have died. That’s hard to come to terms with especially when it was a loved one who did it. It’s true though. My friend had a gun as a 20 year old single woman living alone. A fuckwad friend of hers came across it and decided to fuck around like your girlfriend… and shot his friend in the head, dead, not instantly either.

DO NOT GIVE HER THAT CHANCE.

She needs at MINIMUM to profusely apologize, take a gun safety course to understand where she really fucked up and weigh this one yourself but do not ever go back out with that cousin. As the gun owner, he never should have allowed that.

Edit: correcting my misunderstanding that it was at the cousin’s place when it was that they were out with a cousin of the girlfriend.

  43. a_man_in_black Avatar

Your cousin is not a responsible gun owner. Your every day carry stays on you and in your control. Handing it to some drunk chick for a selfie is neither on his person nor in his control.

  44. Susey_Q Avatar

You are blind if you can’t see the red flag smacking you in the face. Guns aren’t toys. That family isn’t a red flag, it’s a flashing neon light. You’re the AH if you hang around for more than a minute

  45. Tin_Pot_Dictator Avatar

Whats wrong with the cousin that he gave his weapon to a drunk person? WTH

  46. Succulent_Roses Avatar

Why do you think you might be TA?

  47. Critter1960 Avatar

NTA, but you are an idiot, out drinking with someone who is armed. How many Reddit videos do you have to see where this goes from friendly to deadly because of drinking, and someone takes offence to something?

  48. Fun-Yellow-6576 Avatar

NTA. But why did you let it continuing the first place? The instant that gun appeared I would have left the house.

  49. carmachu Avatar

NTA. Although my advice would be not on the spot. But later that night.

Because the only thing worse then alcohol and waving guns around is alcohol and waving a gun around and being upset or pissed off and her holding said gun

  50. LSATDan Avatar

You were hanging out & drinking with a guy who had his gun with him, and stayed there when it was taken out.

You’re not “pretty big on gun safety.”

  51. Bagrick398 Avatar

One little slip up and you would have been shot. NTA .

  52. Internal-Tank-6272 Avatar

What was her dumbass cousin doing while this was happening?

  53. Ad-hocProcrastinator Avatar

You stuck around? The whole family was acting irresponsible. And something tells me it’s the norm.
Chuck the deuces and roll out.

  54. ngroat Avatar

I would have left her there. no way im staying and becoming a tragedy.

    NTA

  55. RedHolly Avatar

NTA, but honestly if her and her family are that lax on gun safety you may want to reevaluate things anyway.

  56. broadsharp2 Avatar

    NTA

Who are these complete idiots you associate with?

  57. changelingcd Avatar

Her cousin is a dangerous moron, and this is much more his fault. NTA, but you’re pissed at the wrong person. She was drunk and (presumably) knows nothing about gun safety.

  58. Remote_Difference210 Avatar

I don’t think she’s a keeper. Just let her go. She’s very immature and irresponsible.

  59. ilovetoeatmeat Avatar

What silly little girl, she needs educating

  60. Ornery_Old_Dude Avatar

Brandishing in public is a crime. Apparently, neither she nor her cousin should be allowed to carry a firearm and both are real dangers around other people when they have them on their person. Find another GF who isn’t a crazy drunk lunatic.

  61. shelizabeth93 Avatar

My ex held a gun to my head while very drunk and choking me. When he calmed down and passed out, I called the police. He had a round in the chamber. His friends moved his crap out the next day. NTA for the ultimatum but a little the AH for even entertaining to keep the relationship going. That was a very dangerous scenario. Next time, you may not get the chance to break up.

  62. Responsible-Rest327 Avatar

alcohol and firearms don’t mix. The fact that she was drunk while handling a gun should be alarming to anyone. It’s not just careless it’s dangerous.

  63. Squibit314 Avatar

Her cousin is an idiot and irresponsible gun owner to hand over his gun to a drunk person.

    NTA

  64. snugbustydream Avatar

I’d be out the door faster than a bullet. Your life is not a game, and a gun is not a toy. The first rule of gun safety is ALWAYS assume it’s loaded and NEVER point it at anything you don’t intend to destroy. Her being drunk makes it more dangerous, not less.

  65. Vigstrkr Avatar

NTA. You really should get away from idiots.

  66. Snxkk Avatar

NTA. Gun safety is very important, and you clearly understand that. The whole situation was inappropriate (guns and alcohol). After the previous night you are absolutely justified in telling her this.

  67. FePirate Avatar

You’ve got more patience than me, I’m breaking up with someone the first time they wave a gun around drunk, not the second lmao.

  68. Mountain-Donkey98 Avatar

This is the most absurd thing ive ever read. Possibly ever. You do know its a crime to point a gun at someone’s head? To threaten them with it?

Shes insane for doing it, drunk or otherwise. Id definitely tell her if SHE EVER picks up a gun, its over. Although, in all reality it could already be over for you if she pulls the trigger. So, you be the judge, is it worth the risk? No.

  69. apietenpol Avatar

Don’t wait. You’re lucky she didn’t shoot you.

  70. PBmaxprofit Avatar

Get out before you’re a statistic. Does the cousin have the gun legally? If not, bigger issue here

  71. FuzzyOrganization403 Avatar

Alcohol and guns can be bad. Maybe she doesn’t know the real dangers. Convos come up when we drink and we bring them out sure. But even our carry, gets unloaded before anyone else can touch them.

Your cousin should have been the smart one to unload before handing it over 100%.

Your GF should be better than handling a loaded gun.

No matter who anyone is, we don’t hand guns over loaded to anyone unless it’s necessary.

Not the ah but def talk to her or break up.

  72. stingertc Avatar

NTA guns aren’t toys the cousin is TA for treating it like a toy

  73. Amazing_Variety5684 Avatar

She was drunk and you didn’t take it away? You are not into gun safety. Everyone in this scenario is the a**hole

  74. NarrMaster Avatar

If she’s that belligerent, I’d wait until the gun was out of her possession to break up with her, not do it in the moment.

Now seems like a good time.
