Alcohol and prescribed medications aside, have you NEVER taken any drugs?

r/

In my late 30’s and I’ve never touched any kind of drug, other than alcohol or a prescription.

I don’t know how I feel about it.

Sometimes I feel like I’d like to experience a natural occuring psychadelic, but I have no idea how to get them anyway.

Class A and designer drugs have absolutely no appeal to me whatsoever and never did, even when I was younger and partying a lot.

    Alcohol is a drug.
    It’s a very dangerous drug.
We need to move the narrative away from it being less of a problem because it’s legal.

Im in my mid 40’s and ive never taken drugs. Or drank wine. Or been out for New Years Eve.
    Not everything interests everyone.

  4. Complex_Work7880 Avatar

I’ve touched most of them and I have to be honest I wish I hadn’t

Drugs can be a lot of fun and can be helpful but I feel like you really wanna know how you’ll react and be in a good place before you take them.

Addiction is quite a small risk for most people but it’s absolute hell on earth and if you think there’s a risk you have that type of personality then I would recommend avoiding them. You will spend every waking moment wishing you were dead

I know people who have never touched substances, started using them after something happened and then boom suddenly they have a very serious problem.

The benefits of taking drugs later in life is that you are much more likely to have a good understanding of yourself and know yourself.

The flip side is you may be completely overwhelmed by them and enamoured by them if you have any sort of shit going on. They can be incredibly powerful in the ways they alter your mind.

I’ve done a few things here or there. It was fun. Some comedowns were horrendous. Kind of like a really bad alcohol hangover, without the headaches but with more sweat and / or warped mind feelings, I guess. You shouldn’t get that with cannabis though.

If you’re going to try, go with cannabis to begin with, but start slow or you’ll likely feel way too weird. Mushrooms and other psychedelics will also likely mess you up a bit on the first go, but to a greater degree.

The general rule is to go easy on anything you try, and be patient while you wait for it to kick in, unless you like the feeling of complete helplessness.

  7. LobsterAstronaut Avatar

Nope never, never even had a cigarette. Drank alcohol briefly in my 20’s but didn’t have the best time so I just stopped.

Never felt like I missed out or anything, just sometimes feel a bit boring when compared to others.

  8. CheeryBottom Avatar

45 and never smoked a cigarette or taken illegal substances. I was the loser in school and none of the popular kids wanted me smoking or doing drugs as that would have made cigarettes and drugs, a loser thing to do.

  9. AttersH Avatar

Never have, never will. I’ve even refused sedatives in hospital because I absolutely despise feeling out of control 🙈 I’d rather be in pain, much to the doctors bemusement. It’s the reason I don’t drink much either. I used to when I was younger & I’d hate myself when I got to the point of being really drunk & not quite all there. I quite quickly learnt I had much more fun with 3-4 drinks & control of myself! Now, I don’t drink at all bar the occasional social one.

Everyone is different but I am quite certain it’s not for me!

  10. swansw9 Avatar

I’m in the same boat. Mid thirties, have had periods of my life where I’ve drank pretty heavily, but have stuck with alcohol only. Through fear of consequences, really. I wish I’d experimented more, and it feels a bit late now really.

E’s and coke in my 20s at clubs or after-parties.

Haven’t touched either in about 15 years and doubt I ever will again. Infact I’m damn sure I won’t 🤣

I’ll be honest though and I’m not condoning drug use, but E’s are absolutely amazing. Or at least they were. Had some of the best times of my life on E’s in clubs and then cracking on back at a party until the next day. The feeling of euphoria and happiness was unreal. Coming out of a club and the suns come up, your with all your mates and the party is about to carry on = 😎 Even better somewhere like Ibiza.

Don’t get me wrong I could go out and not bother with either, but the combo of the right music, people and E takes things onto another level.

Coke decent too after a few beers (and in moderation). But again I wouldn’t bother these days. Been there done that.

Never touched a psychedelic and barely tried weed. Was out of the partying scene when meow-meow and ket came along

  12. EverybodySayin Avatar

Aside from anablic steroids and related stuff, recreationally I’ve never done anything stronger than weed. With the former, the risk is possible damage to your body internally which can be mitigated with sensibile use, but psychoactive stuff scares the shit out of me.

  13. Single-Aardvark9330 Avatar

I pretty much only take prescription

Especially because most the time I’m advised not to drink caffeine or alcohol

  14. Confudled_Contractor Avatar

Tried some drugs in my College/Uni years. Some of my friend were more heavily into Weed/Speed/pills as was the fashion back then.

I came to the realisation quite quickly how fucking boring it was, generally involved sitting around and pills weren’t thing. I was happier in a pub talking to women (for conversation purposes obvs 😬).

  15. Outrageous_Jury4152 Avatar

Boring life if never taken drugs. At least try alcohol in your life lol

  16. mrhippoj Avatar

I think if you’ve made it this far without having any drugs, there’s not much reason to try it. I used to smoke a shitload of weed and at the time it did help me get through some stuff I was struggling with mentally and emotionally, but the other thing it did was put a complete halt on my life as well as making me feel super anxious in social situations.

I’ve never done mushrooms, but I did try salvia which used to be a legal hallucinogen. The cool thing about that was that it could be very strong, but it only lasts like 2-5 minutes. It’s a bit like falling asleep and having the most vivid and insane dream, only to wake up, ask people how long you were asleep for and them to say that they didn’t even realise you’d been asleep. No idea how you find that these days, and even if you do the strength varies so much from feeling basically nothing to having a full on out of body experience.

The only illegal drug that I can see myself wanting to ever do again at this point is ecstacy/MDMA, which is kinda like brute-forcing a good time, but I don’t think it’s an essential experience.

One thing I’ll say about drugs to people who have never done any is that while the whole “alcohol is a drug” thing is kind of a cliche, it really is, and imo one of the more intense ones. No drug I’ve tried has felt as detrimental to my personal well-being as alcohol has, but it’s still the only one I still do.

  17. Over_Bend_9839 Avatar

I tried weed a couple of times as a teenager but never really thought it was anything special and not better than alcohol. Also tried a well known stock broker propellant once and although it was marvellous the next day I thought ‘crikey, the best way to deal with this hangover is another spot of you know what.’ My next reaction was to say fuck that, that’s how addiction starts. I’m never having that again, and I haven’t. I’ve also had plenty of opioid pain killers to control pain after surgery which I haven’t been warned were addictive, but in my experience they only make me feel slightly spaced out, and in a bit less pain. Not something I would describe as high or happy. Certainly not addictive. The best medicine I ever had was ketamine, administered intravenously to control pain immediately prior to waking up after surgery. I can attest to that making you feel serene and that all is right with the world. I can see why it’s so popular and addictive as a recreational way to completely wreck your body.

  18. HoraceorDoris Avatar

62 and never bothered with them. It had severe consequences when I was in the armed forces and I never bothered with them when I left.

A major reason for that was not so much that I object to recreational drugs (I would rather be in a room full of people on ecstasy’s than in a bar full of pissed people), but I think if I did one, I would do them all and that would be to excess. My friends did them and grew out of them, they knew how I felt and respected that.

So no, don’t object to others doing them, but not for me thanks👍

  19. robster9090 Avatar

Prescribed ones are the absolute worst . Speaking from someone that loved a pain killer those things are soul sucking any one reading this and not had one outside of a script don’t do it … you feel that depression anxiety go and feel like a normal human and you’ll never not know that feeling and then the addiction starts

The irony iv never had pressed pills or powders ever due to fear , my drugs have all been to help my depression and I stayed away from ‘street drugs’ due to fear I’d killmyself on the come down or I’d die instantly .

I’d likely have fared much better with a x or line every now and again

  20. Obvious-Water569 Avatar

    Smoked weed in my 20s.

Tried again a couple of years ago and realised I do not like weed.

Also tried coke for the first and only time a few years ago at a friend’s wedding reception. It was fun, but I have no great desire to do it again.

Beyond that, it’s just alcohol and precription meds.

  21. BusyBeeBridgette Avatar

I tried weed two, or three, times at Uni. That was about it. Wasn’t a fan. That is the most extreme I got outside of booze.

  22. Violet351 Avatar

  24. Liturginator9000 Avatar

Drugs are massive class of substances from just compounds that make you feel a bit better to others that completely change your life and outlook

There’s a lot of risk with harder substances but I think people are missing out on something never having tripped or rolled mdma in the least, the insights you get into your thinking and the potential for changing rutted thought patterns is immense, not to mention accessing experiences you can never get sober that have, imo, a fair bit of novel value just seeing what the brain can do and how illusory our self is

  25. two-girls-one-tank Avatar

Don’t bother, none of them are worth the comedowns after and any fun you have later just feels fake.

I (26F) am 679 days free from drugs and 417 days free from alcohol.

36, never touched an illegal substance. Never smoked or vaped either, just alcohol and prescriptions.

  29. Fickle_Hope2574 Avatar

Nearly 40 and never taken any. I’ve seen the state it gets people in so why would I want to put myself in such a vulnerable position?

  30. No_Technology3293 Avatar

I’m 42, and never so much as smoked tobacco let alone taken illegal drugs.

I drink occasionally(used to drink a lot) and have only taken over the counter or prescribed medication.

  31. Naive-Interaction567 Avatar

Never! I’ve worked with too many addicts. My life is fun enough with occasional alcohol.

  32. SociallyFuntionalGuy Avatar

They’re lying to you. In moderation, it’s all fine. I’ve been doing coke for over 15 years, and I don’t have a problem.

I’m a class A worrier so I’d probably get a paranoia attack of some sort if I tired hard drugs. So no, aside from alcohol and some minor medications I haven’t. I know it would no good for my anxiety. There’s also the fact I can’t really afford a drug habit.

  35. azkeel-smart Avatar

Considering how alcohol ranks very high on both, damage to health and addiction forming charts. Not far from cocains. I tried a lot of stuff but never anything worse than alcohol.

  36. folklovermore_ Avatar

I’ve smoked cigarettes a couple of times, drink occasionally, and have taken prescription/over the counter medication as necessary, but that’s it. I think I was too scared from all the horror stories/public information films at school – both of any potential side effects and of getting into trouble with the police.

  37. boudicas_shield Avatar

I’ve smoked weed a few times (it doesn’t agree with me) and tried Adderall without a prescription (usually to help me focus for a big paper, with one exception, but also I probably have ADHD myself lol). I also smoke nicotine.

Other than that, no. I’ve never been interested. I have enough problems liking a drink more than I should; I’ve always figured I didn’t need to risk adding more substances to the mix. I also have mental health problems (anxiety, PTSD) and don’t know how I’d react, and the thought of having any kind of bad experience with a drug makes me nervous. It’s just never appealed to me.

I have been weirdly judged for this, mainly by British people since I moved here. I find it really startling; I’m not sure why people get so offended that I haven’t ever wanted to party with cocaine or MDMA or whatever. My husband used to use them in his late teens/20s and has told me he doesn’t think they would’ve been a good or fun choice for me, so I don’t have any regrets, but some people seem to take that so personally.

I remember one conversation where this came up and I tried to make it so clear that I don’t judge others for enjoying “party drugs”, I just don’t think they would work for me, and one woman got upset and kept insisting that my refusal to try drugs was clearly me being a judgmental snob about other people who do, and arguing with me when I tried to explain that me not wanting to do it myself didn’t mean I thought she was wrong for enjoying it. I found it very strange.

  38. Cheesefiend94 Avatar

Weed once, I didn’t really care for it.

Prescription I’m on a lot for my back.

  39. ThePineappleSeahorse Avatar

I haven’t tried any drugs either. They’ve never appealed to me and I have no intention of ever trying them.

  40. tinned_peaches Avatar

I used to when I was teen. E’s were great it was like the best bit of being drunk without being sick. I was never able to tolerate weed very well, had many embarrassing whiteys. Stopped smoking and partaking in anything at 21 when my mum died of lung cancer and I was pregnant. In my late 30’s now, still enjoy the odd binge drink, some of my friends do coke but it’s not for me. If you’ve never tried it and you’re a fully grown adult, I wouldn’t bother, no good will come of it x

  41. iain_1986 Avatar

I honestly just don’t care either way.

I did smoke weed in the past, but also just don’t like smoking in general – would only smoke nicotine when already fairly drunk. Weed in any other form I’m sure i’d enjoy more but now i’m older, with a kid – I don’t drink anywhere near as much as I sued too – just don’t care

  42. PavlovaToes Avatar

I don’t even drink, I’ve never been drunk and I’m in my 30’s lol

  43. Dazzling-Bear3942 Avatar

49 here, and I’ve smoked a bit of weed in the past, but it never really agreed with me. I do regret not partying more when younger and experimenting with coke and ecstasy as I think I would have enjoyed them at the time. I was always just way too cautious. It’s a young person’s game, however, so my chance has been missed.

No. My generation didn’t. Alcohol on the other hand I took in copious amounts of

  46. Beautiful_Hour_4744 Avatar

My husband hasn’t, never even smoked a cigarette. He grew up with abusive, alcohol, drug using parents and it’s completely turned him off it, he would never touch them.

I’m the opposite, grew up with a lovely, non drug using family but couldn’t wait to try drugs as a teen.

  47. oldt1mer Avatar

I did weed once in my early 20s, didn’t really get the hype and left it at that.
