Always on displays are stupid, and nothing more then a gimmick.

r/

I really don’t understand why people are so excited about an always on display. Is it too much work for you to pick your phone up, and turn it on? the AOD won’t work if your phone is dead, so there’s not really a point in it. It’s just a waste of battery, and is really just a gimmick. I’ve never once said: “gee I sure am heckin lucky to have my always on display! Such a useful feature” Anyways, AOD’S are a gimmick, and I have never found a use for them.

I have never found use for a motorcycle, they are a gimmick.

Honestly, I agree. That’s the first thing I disable with a new phone.

    Yes.

Always on displays are like that one aunt at family gatherings… annoyingly loud and pointless

I’m so done with these gimmicks wasting my battery. Flip phones worked just fine without unnecessary bells and whistles

I exclusively buy phones that have that feature, specifically for that feature. I guess if you’re willing to shell out and wear around one of those internet watch thingies it would be unnecessary.

I love it have a flap that cover my screen when i open it, it turns on. same with my watch when i rotate it towards me it turns on otherwise its off and is actually saving battery life.

  8. Pompous_Italics Avatar

What is even the point? One of the first things I do is disable it. It just uses up the battery.

  9. 10k_Uzi Avatar

Yeah I never really understood why you’d want that. I feel like it just murders your battery. My ex had it on, and every time I had to use her phone. I’d keep clicking the lock button to turn the screen off and be like why won’t it go? Oh yeah always on.

An always-on display is battery draining. However, Samsungs have a “turn on for 10 secs” AOD which is very useful and doesn’t use up battery

I’ve never used the reheat function, must be a gimmick.

Must be an iPhone thing. I can turn off my screensaver anytime I want to

The US economy requires 2.7% to 3% growth year over year to be considered healthy/avoiding a recession (not sure if that also applies globally). Therefore, gimmicks are required to suit the needs of this model.

Humans are also suckers for gimmicks. Year over year over year over year ……..

AOD on modern phones take like 1% of battery tops… They are also an added feature easily deactivated. Wasted post here with weak arguments.

For the folks pointing to battery drain, it’s really insubstantial. For one, “always-on” is a misnomer as, for example, the iPhone will fully turn off the display if it senses that the screen is covered (such as in a pocket), if the user has left the room (proximity to Apple Watch), or if it’s not used for a very long period of time. AOD’s usually use a very slow refresh rate (once per second, sometimes) and low brightness to minimize demand.

As for use cases, I can think of several. It’s helpful to see the clock or notifications without having to touch it, having a nice photo displayed is aesthetically pleasing, widgets like maps and connections with other devices like TV’s become more visually interactive— again without physical engagement.

There are useful things for it. I work from home so if I want to take off for a bit in the afternoon I can have Slack open with AOD and it will show that I’m online and I just keep it plugged in. My PC will time out and set it to away after a certain amount of time.

  17. Kimmranu Avatar

Wow its almost like I want to know the time or which notification I have and not having to press a button for the screen to activate. Crazy right?

  18. Cocacola_Desierto Avatar

I used to think it was dumb till I had one. The point isn’t that you can just pick up your phone. It’s that you know you don’t need to at a glance, or, you can quickly check the time. A watch does the same, and a smartwatch would also do the same except it has a specific feature when you turn your wrist it turns on.

Imagine if you had to touch your watch to wake it up every time you wanted to check the time. Would be pretty stupid, don’t you think?

AOD uses like 3-5% of the battery in a day. That’s well worth it for seeing notifications without having to interact with the phone. Especially if you’re wearing dirty-ass gloves at work or whatever. If you don’t need or want that, just turn it off?

There are scenarios where it is too much to keep turn back on my phone if I need my phone to stay on more than 5 minutes

  21. j_grouchy Avatar

They should make all clocks require you to pick them up and tap a button to see the time.

  22. WarmHippo6287 Avatar

Before I got my smartwatch, my use for the always on display function was to be able to see the time without having to pick up the phone. Before you ask, why not just pick up the phone. Because I wasn’t allowed to at my previous job. My cellphone was not to be in my hand unless I was calling my boss, the fire department, or the police in an emergency. But I didn’t always have a clock where I was put to work, and not knowing the time makes me nervous. Getting too nervous can be detrimental for me. I have seizures. So, I was allowed to just use that function to make sure I could see the time at all times. But now I have a smartwatch so I no longer need it. lol

  23. -Eat_The_Rich- Avatar

You can just turn it off bro

  24. MidnightPulse69 Avatar

I have a bad habit of checking my phone so I like it since I don’t have to constant pick it up and check

  25. bananasmash14 Avatar

I agree with you for phones, but I love AOD on my smartwatch

  26. RightToTheThighs Avatar

I had a phone with AOD like 6 years ago and it wasn’t new then either. All it is is a feature. You don’t have to use it.

  27. Maxpower2727 Avatar

I want to be able to see the time and battery status at a glance and without lighting up the whole display. I use my phone as a bedside alarm clock and it wouldn’t be possible (or at least practical) to do that without having an always-on display.
