am i screwed?

r/

hey yall. i’m new here and all. but was wondering for those with experience

I made a bad choice today, and had a lapse in judgement. I was cited by a state trooper for traveling 85 miles per hour in a posted 65. I’m hoping to get on with a sheriffs office for corrections in a neighboring state in 9-12 months when i turn 18. Unfortunately, this speeding ticket, due to its high speed, is classified as a Class 3 Misdemeanor. Will this citation hold me back in my journey in law enforcement? it’s all i’ve ever wanted to do, and i’m active in community service and volunteering locally. I know this could be sort of a strange question, but was hoping to find others with similar experiences.

Oooops. Yeah, that may very well delay your plans if you’re convicted.

If they drop it down to a cite instead, then you will probably be good. Although even speeding tickets can hem people up at your age, since the departments don’t have a lot of life experience to judge you on.
If you are convicted of the misdemeanor, then you are fucked for a while yes. Probably a solid 3 years before they would start to consider you. Again, mainly because you aren’t even 18 yet and the departments don’t want people that young usually, so giving them any extra reason to question hiring you would be no bueno brother.

You want to be a cop, so stop fucking speeding. Make better choices, you have to if you want this career.

Get a good lawyer that specializes in traffic crime/ reckless driving. Depending on the state, you can expect to pay up to $5k between the lawyer and the fine. Most likely around $2k, the speed isn’t that excessive. Being right on the money at 20mph over, a good lawyer can probably argue it down to a $500 speeding ticket.
