An online shop has been refusing to delete my customer account & has pushed back each time I’ve reached out about canceling a subscription I didn’t consent to.

r/

My efforts of requesting for my data and account to be deleted and for said company to quit trying to make fraudulent charges to my card for the past year or so have either been met with further pushback and harassment, or complete silence as of recent. Every six months or so I am met with a random notification about this company trying to charge my card.

Without name-dropping, back in 2023 I purchased a dental impression kit from this company so I can get a night guard. I received the kit with no issue aside from the fact that I was going to have additional dental work done that might mess with the accuracy of the night guard, so I found myself not being in a rush to do the impressions (I never ended up sending it in to this day).

Long story short, about six months goes by and I’m seeing transaction attempts from the company on my bank account. I was unknowingly subscribed into a periodic program where they send you a new kit every so often.

I immediately went into my account to see what my options are. On top of the forced subscription this is where it gets even more shady.

The website has no option for easily canceling or unsubscribing from any services. I didn’t hesitate to contact support about this.

The response from support made matters worse. They told me that it’s mandatory for me to send in my impressions before they can cancel or delete my account.

On top of this, I brought up my concerns about the email regarding a subscription and random charge attempt for the kit I already purchased about six months previous.

I was met with the same answer about them not being able to delete or cancel any subscription or account information, while also being told that I can go into my account and postpone the charge and shipment by requesting a later fulfillment date…

I basically told them that I was supposed to have dental work done over a span of time and that I wasn’t in a rush to send it in, and also that I might not need to use their service anymore regardless. This communication was last year. I haven’t heard back from them since.

Here I am yet again being met with the same charge attempts and inability to cancel the random subscription and my account. I reached again out via email multiple times over this past week and am being met with silence.

I feel so beyond annoyed and harassed by this company. I even made a note to mention how I believe they are in violation of FTC guidelines due to not having a way to unsubscribe from subscriptions or to request for account deletion. I will also be ordering a new bank card this week. I was stubborn and didn’t want to initially request a new one, but this is getting annoying.

What should I do???

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I had stopped using this specific bank account for a while but continued to keep it open, so luckily they weren’t able to successfully push the charges through since I kept the bare minimum in the account to keep it open. I did start to use it more actively again recently, so I don’t need or want them taking my money.

I also should mention that I did contact the bank about this issue. They said that they can’t block them unless the transaction attempts successfully go through.

EDIT 2: My main concerns on top of the charge attempts are that my personal data is potentially being mishandled, exploited, or sold, and that the company reps are pressuring me into sending my impressions back as an attempt to collect biometric data via dental impressions, which could possibly explain the ultimatum they gave me.

File a complaint with the FTC and your bank to stop charges. Document everything and consider consumer protection help or legal advice. Stay firm you deserve better.

If you were in the United States file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

You need to be talking to your credit card yesterday, get a refund for all of the charges besides the initial Dental impression kit that you did purchase. Probably the credit card company will say that they can’t block all transactions from this company. They will recommend that you cancel this card and get a new card. I agree with this, you should cancel this card and get a new card. This company is misbehaving so badly I would not be surprised if they are selling your information and finding other things that they can sign you up for.

Please understand that this company is absolutely incapable of unsubscribing or stopping charges. They will not do it. You are wasting your time. You need to go through your credit card company.

File complaints wherever you can. Please continue to warn for consumers about this malicious company.

Contact your state attorney general’s office. They should have a consumer fraud division.

You say charge “attempt.” So clearly it’s not working. What is the nature of these attempts, and why are they blocked? Not that I’m suggesting they shouldn’t be blocked, I’m just confused about the mechanics here.

That’s frustrating when places try to force future purchases. I experienced an issue with teeth whitening trays where they were trying to automatically subscribe me for a bunch of costs I didn’t sign up for. The customer service insisted that it was “part of the package”. I advised repeatedly that no where in any of the fine print did it state anything about those charges and for them to send me the confirmation where I signed off and agreed to this new subscription. It was only after I kept saying if I agreed to this, you should have no issue providing me the signed agreement. If there is no agreement that you can provide, you are knowingly changing the terms after the fact and commiting fraud. They eventually got a manager to remove the charges and cancel. This seems to be a normal thing for places to scam subscriptions for things not agreed upon.

Call your credit card company, have them deny the charges, and contact the company themselves.
Also, contact the FTC to file a complaint

yo this is seriously messed up. the fact that they’re holding your account hostage unless you send in impressions?? that sounds borderline predatory, especially if they’re pushing for biometric data. and the no-delete/account-cancel thing is a straight up red flag. you’re right to bring up FTC rules, cuz companies have to give you a way to cancel subscriptions and delete data. honestly, report them. file a complaint with the FTC and your state’s consumer protection office. might also be worth looking into a chargeback for past attempts and maybe even a lawyer if this drags on. you’re not overreacting at all, this sounds like a shady operation.

Is this a credit card or a bank account?

Tell them you’ve moved to a California address. It’s illegal in CA, I believe, for them not to cancel.

  14. billdizzle Avatar

Ask them what happens if you die and thus can never send an impression. How is your account closed if it can only be closed when you send an impression

Get a prepaid card with $10 on it. Log in, update your payment information, delete old information. Go buy coffee with the $10.
