Anything I need to do to establish that a houseguest is no longer a “tenant”?

Location: Michigan.

A non-immediate family member turned an emergency 1-2 night stay into the better part of a year, including using my address as a mailing address.

He decided it was time to move on and voluntarily left, but his mail is still coming here.

Is there anything I need to do to prevent him from claiming that he only went away “for a bit” but never actually stopped living here, which if he dug his heels in might require a court order to evict him?

There was never any rent, we were just being nice. If not for the fact that he was here well over 30 days and using this address for official government correspondence I wouldn’t be worried at all, but if there is something to do that definitely establishes that he has moved out (to transient housing, actually, so he has no permanent address now) I will do it.

You can go to the post office and have a stop pit on all his mail. You might need to show proof of where he’s staying now, but this will start the process of proving he’s no longer a resident.

For anything beyond that, definitely talk to a lawyer
