Are conservatives having a “mask off” moment right now?

r/

It is plain to see that this administration has been terrible thus far, correct? I’m so confused at how conservatives still have support that I end up questioning myself in that somehow I have it wrong. Am I crazy or is 50% of the US, OR is this the term they realize how much they effed up?

A good amount of voters are either uneducated, gullible, or very misinformed. That’s why Trump’s approval ratings haven’t gone down the toilet.

    Yep

They showed us they are still the same Confederate scumbag America defeated 160 years ago.

They don’t believe or respect any news source that is accurately reporting on current events.

I’m an outsider, but it’s obvious that American liberals and conservatives live in separate impenetrable information bubbles.

Before you liberals get up in arms about it, I’m not equating the two. One is obviously more detached from reality than the other.

The point is that 50% of the population lives in a different reality based on their media consumption. As far as they are aware, Trump is bringing back jobs and standing up for America through reciprocal tariffs. He’s undoing the years of weak Obama apology tours and restoring America’s position in the geopolitical order. Meanwhile the libs are angry Elon is exposing corruption and subjecting his business ti violent reprisals.

It’s the inevitable outcome of the obsessive free speech culture and corporate media.

What you have to understand is that Trumpism and MAGA is a cult.

Cults operate differently from regular political movements or even fandoms. You could legitimately claim that Obama had a fan-following among Dems, but even those who loved him were able to criticize him.

Well over half of the people who support Trump are truly subsumed into the cult. The remaining ones are either scared of the cult (literally there are people who didn’t vote for his impeachment because of death threats and fear for the safety of their families) or people who are terrified of losing power and don’t want to be voted out by the cult.

If you read the conservative forums, even the people who voted for him who don’t like what he’s doing say that they would probably vote for him again if he ran.

The way US politics are these days, most people know more about the opposition (and all its failings) than about the issues with the party they support, so even people who aren’t blind to the Orange one’s failings still see the open-border, pro-pedo, anti-freedom, anti-military, unpatriotic dems as worse. (I’m using the tags they would assign to the Dems, not the ones I would).

Anti-Trump Independent here, the cracks are slowly beginning to appear.

Even r/Conservative is not maintaining their blind-support. Most people are recognizing the problems.

The biggest catalyst are the markets right now, this man is TANKING the economy, and a lot of older pre-retirees are looking at their accounts with unese considering they were planning on leaving within the next few years. Even people who have rebalanced appropriately according to traditional financial planning advice are concerned due the inflation risk impacting their fixed income.

They voted for Trump based on his promises of improving the economy – this will make a lot of people angry, including congress members.

    >…is this the term they realize how much they effed up?

    The most likely outcome:

    • Republicans will become less popular because of what they are doing with power.
    • As a result, they will be less likely to win elections in the future.
    • Once out of power, the people will forget, and elect Republicans again.

We are at the same point in the cycle as we were eight years ago.

i despise this administration and what they’re doing, however i do not regret voting for him because i am a never democrat voter. it was either vote him, vote 3rd party which is essentially a vote for him, or don’t vote at all. as a citizen i felt the need to vote. i wish he wasn’t the nominee but he was.

i can’t wait for 2028, and it can’t come soon enough

I think it’s important to have those moments where you question why you believe what you believe. If you get into the habit of parroting the party line, you lose your ability to think freely on an individual policy basis.

As for why conservatives think this is the way to go forward, I think there’s a lot of factors.

There’s the tech bros/billionaires who obviously stand to gain a lot from this.

There’s the MAGA who view this situation as a sporting event, and just see that “their guy” is winning and get a massive boner for it. They’ll never admit that Trump is a failure because that would mean admitting that they contributed heavily into that failure.

Then there’s (some of the) original conservatives who view these actions as representative of a time in the past that was better for them. However, my opinion, is that our country (at least used to) improve each day, as we correct injustices, improve our quality of life, and extend our lives. I think a lot of people try to find an external source to put their failures onto, myself included, and it’s easy to find a recent political event or admin as the scapegoat you need.

The entire mentality of MAGA, in my opinion, is flawed in the fact that we should not be saying America is great, because it’s not. We have a lot of issues that we are still working out. Saying it is great subdues us into complacency that this is the best we can get, and I disagree with that at a fundamental level.

Since they’ve been working to make it illegal to wear masks in public, I’d say yes.

So much for freedom of expression.

The only maga voters that regret Trump at this point are the ones personally affected by him that understand that he is directly responsible for their misery. In other words, a small minority his voters.

What I want to know is why a huge number of Trump’s opponents are not speaking up in favour of some of the foundational principles that have stood for decades, that Trump is steamrolling, such as affirmative actions and DEI? Mass migration? Not to mention more recent policies such as trans rights, or continuing the war in Ukraine, or why Israel is evil?

We’ve had two months to think and formulate a response to Trump 2.0, and what critique have we to offer? “They’re terrible” is neither a valid criticism nor a positive vision. Is the Democrat party due to have its Tea Party reformation? I am really interested to see what will come out of it.

Every protest I’ve been to has random people walking up saying: “What is everybody protesting”

People have their heads down. they’re working. they’re concerned with rent and food. “politics” isn’t something they care about. It’s background noise.
