Are my apple trees and subsequent bees who partake in fallen apples against the law?

r/

I’m a 32m, lived at this house for my entire life, my mom died literally a year ago tomorrow, she had owned the house, it’s now mine, but she hadn’t lived here in 14 years. Last three years or so ago people have been complaining about bees to the city, despite them being a regular thing for at least 25+ years. Don’t mess with them they don’t mess with you type bees. I keep the sidewalks clear of all apples, the lawn bees feast. I still get letters from the city? What am I doing wrong all of a sudden?

You can’t leave rotting food on your property. It is a risk to the neighborhood.

I imagine your mother originally gathered the fruit and used the apples. And any rotted fruit she would have picked up and thrown in the garbage. This would minimize the bees as they would come for the blooms but without rotting fruit they will not come back after. Looms drop off.

Yes but neighbors and city complaining about bees in general. Wasps, hornets, bumble bees, honey bees, yellow jackets,, etc… are all bees. Neighbors perspective is bees in general.

Eliminate ripe fruit use it yourself or give to a local food bank.this removes most of the fruit that was attracting all the other bees. Check the ground under the trees at least every 3 or 4 days for dropped damaged fruit and put it in a sealed garbage can.

But how can you be cool with it for 25+ years then all of a sudden deem a nuisance? Nothing new has happened and all of a sudden they’re an issue to address.

OP, you may want to look into your local community for fruit sharing groups. Falling Fruit, Not Far From the Tree, FruitShare, etc. Typically a group of people who are willing to come pick your fruit trees for you. Depending on the group they may have it so the owners get some, the pickers get some, and some get donated. They are fantastic programs that ensure fruit gets used instead of trashed

There should never be an apple on the ground. If they fall pick them up promptly so you don’t get rats. 🐀 🐀🐀 Don’t be gross and leave them on the ground.

Info: why are you just leaving it to rot? If you don’t want the apples, surely there’s a food bank or charity or even a farmer who would take them?

If you don’t want to donate them, why wouldn’t you pick them up?

Some native bees are on the endangered species list.
Don’t let the fruit just rot. Collect the fallen ones and place a FREE APPLES 🍎 sign up.

Unless you’re dealing with an HOA, you can’t force someone to exterminate bees. Also, pretty sure bees are some kind of protected by law after all the panic.

If there’s an HOA involved, good luck

You might want to find a copy of their charter and get a lawyer to look it over for you. Sometimes HOAs can go so far as sell your house out from under you. Might be redundant for me to say, HOAs are a prome example of “good in theorey, nightmare in practice”

What are the bees doing? Vandalism?

I’m a beekeeper so there are at least 50,000 bees in my yard right now, and I want them there, they don’t do anything harmful, they don’t sting unless you mess with their home.

Even if the bees in question are not honeybees, they will be distracted by the fruit and are highly unlikely to sting anyone.

Plus, they are bees, they will be in the neighborhood, on everyone’s flowers, or on your fruit, or on garbage, or wherever they can find something sweet to eat.

No amount of letters from any city can eradicate the precious pollinators that we all need to live.

Maybe it took 30 years of community complaints to result in a citation.

New neighbors who are anti-bee? What exactly is the city telling you?

I’m sorry for your loss. I hope you can sort it out. I think your home and trees and bees are a lovely legacy.

She probably used the apples and relocated the bad ones. All sorts of critters love rotting apples, they all play nice unless you step on them or threaten their loot. Clear out the ones near the sidewalk, at night, when temps drop.

Someone is harassing the city, and so they harass you. Find out who.

I’m really sorry to hear about your mom. That must be a tough anniversary coming up. As for your apple trees and the bees, it sounds like you’re doing a great job keeping things tidy by clearing the sidewalks! Bees are such important little creatures, and it’s awesome that you’re providing them with a safe space to thrive.

What specifically do the city letters say? Does it say it’s a nuisance or cite a part of the city code about this issue? That will answer your question. Source: am lawyer and know a lot about municipal law
