Are people really eating Chicken and Waffles?

r/

I keep seeing Chicken and Waffles flavored things. Lays had a Limited Chip flavor. There’s an ice cream that has that flavor. I’ve never seen anyone actually eat these two things together. Is this a thing?

    It’s definitely a thing

  2. Anything-Complex Avatar

It is. Waffles and fish are also a thing.

  3. Concise_Pirate Avatar

Aye, it’s a real dish I’ve seen at restaurants, and tried twice. It started as a “between midnight and breakfast” thing to have after jazz concerts in NYC decades ago. So it combines a dinner food with a breakfast food. It’s … ok.

Soak a piece of chicken in maple syrup. Itll change your life.

  5. sics2014 Avatar

At restaurants, yes. Sometimes I’m in the mood for it.

Personally I like to do chicken and pancakes cause taking out, using, then cleaning my waffle iron is a bit too much for me but pancakes hit the same imo. I usually don’t do it intentionally either, it’s usually a Sunday morning when my kids want pancakes but I fried chicken the night before.

  7. Lurkingentropy Avatar

Yup. Cracker Barrel has it on the menu among a ton of other places including specific restaurants built around the idea. My kids seem to love it.

Not only is it a thing, it is a really good thing. More of a brunch thing than something you would typically have at dinner. Not any weirder than steak and eggs. But definitely more of a thing you would get at a good soul food restaurant than make at home.

Though I have done “lazy chicken and waffles” where I have chicken nuggets heated in the toaster oven with frozen waffles heated in the toaster.

Lol yes. Funny, I’m a lunch clerk at an elementary school and one of our rotating lunch options is chicken and waffles. It’s really popular among the kids.

  10. Kharv911 Avatar

For me, it’s more about fried chicken and syrup, the waffle is just an edible plate

There’s a Cajun place near me that does chicken and waffles. They’ve altered the dish slightly, since 2020, but it used to be a few chicken tenders(soaked in buttermilk for 24 hrs before cooking) on top of a waffle that had big chunks of thick bacon throughout, and coffee infused maple syrup.

  12. Razgriz1992 Avatar

Absolutely a thing – a nice crispy piece of fried chicken, a savory waffle, coated with maple syrup. The only thing I insist on is real maple syrup

  13. Jewish-Mom-123 Avatar

I’m making it tonight for supper. Cornbread, cheddar and jalapeño in the waffles, frozen chicken strips. I’ve ordered it a few times in restaurants but not made it at home before.

  14. Realsorceror Avatar

How good it is really depends on the fried chicken. Some places its incredible. One of the tastiest combos I’ve had. Some places its just…freezer chicken nuggets and a sad waffle.

  15. PotAndPansForHands Avatar

Oh yeah it’s thing and it’s fantastic.

  16. FlaminFlabbarghast Avatar

The combination of crispy, fried chicken and sweet waffles covered in maple syrup and melted butter is a taste explosion. Not to be missed. An UNAMI BOMB.

  17. BrewboyEd Avatar

    It is in southeast Virginia

  18. Belise_the_Bat Avatar

Yes, it’s a real thing. Why companies combine them into things like chips and ice cream, though…I’ll never know.

  19. DiamondDustMBA Avatar

Yep a diner near me severs it

  20. No_Sand_9290 Avatar

Thanks to food network everyone that is not a southerner think we eat chicken and waffles all the time. Eating chicken and waffles is not that common. Most people that eat them are travelers who are convinced they have to try it.

  21. The_Craig89 Avatar

Yo Dawg I heard you like diabetes, so I dunked your fried foods in maple syrup, you can have have a heart palpation whilst you fall into a diabetic coma

  22. Vitalsigner Avatar

    Absolutely. It’s delicious.

  23. Ok_Watercress_4953 Avatar

The sweet and salty combination is delicious and more filling than just a waffle by itself. Sometimes you just get tired of bad diner fried eggs !

  24. catzing Avatar

it is soo good! definitely not something a lot of people eat regularly, but waffles are just bread and maple flavored chicken is bomb, so why not? i like to get maple flavored chicken and put it between two waffles like a sandwich, then dip it in syrup…. usualllyyy when ive had a bit of green though😅

  25. nervousRexy Avatar

    Yes, and it’s delicious

  26. MourningWallaby Avatar

it’s a phenominal breakfast option that mixes sweet and savory. Personally I like it a little sweet, but some put bbq sauce on it. personally just a little syrup or hot sauce is enough.

  27. jambr380 Avatar

There’s a diner down the street from me literally called, Chicken and Waffles. It’s been open a few years now

  28. Jaded_Post1937 Avatar

It’s a staple in any good soul food restaurant.

Crispy fried chicken, the sweet, sticky maple syrup – your taste buds will thank you and your arteries will suffer. Best late night meal ever

  29. Ok_Monitor5890 Avatar

    It’s so good

  30. bdouble76 Avatar

Yes. And when it’s done right….. it is glorious.

  31. Weary_Minute1583 Avatar

We tried it once just for fun since it seemed like an odd combination. Now it’s a treat for small family celebrations.

  32. FewTelevision3921 Avatar

Worked at a factory in Ohio and saw a bro eating it decades ago. My guess it is a southern thing. But what got me was the fact that it was a whole piece of chicken and not boneless. To anyone who was raised on this; is it always a whole piece or is it ever boneless?

  33. Rand_Casimiro Avatar

In parts of the south it’s a big deal. I think it’s fine, but the combination isn’t anything special to me

  34. xiaorobear Avatar

it is so much a thing that it has a wikipedia page. Popularized originally by the Pennsylvania Dutch, then integrated into Soul Food.

  35. Guilty-Finish3477 Avatar

It’s a thing. But it’s not great everywhere. Some places make it really good, and other places have nothing special to it. Less than mid

  36. abbygirl Avatar

It’s one of the best things to have for brunch

  37. steely_92 Avatar

I make it a couple of times a year. Especially good if you make a jalapeno cornbread waffle instead of a traditional waffle. And real maple syrup is key.

  38. Embarrassed-Cause250 Avatar

Yep! It is a thing, my kids ask for it when they find it on the menu. I don’t think I will ever try it though, I will stick to bacon or sausage with my waffles.

  39. Straight-Donut-6043 Avatar

I’m not all that into potato chips but the chicken and waffles flavor is fucking crack.

But yes, in general, it is a real combo that works really well.

  40. hellhound28 Avatar

It’s always been a thing where I’m from. However, it was never something we had anywhere outside of home or a diner. Now it’s getting the internet treatment that bacon got about a decade ago, and that is mind boggling, just as it was with the bacon.

  41. Tumi420 Avatar

America loves its chicken and waffles

  42. LookinAtTheFjord Avatar

It’s popular in the black community.

  43. House_Way Avatar

less than the sum of its parts

  44. SRB112 Avatar

Chicken and Waffles has always been around, but pretty limited.  About 5 years ago it became more popular, then suddenly everybody started putting it on their menu.

  45. Catcaves821 Avatar

It’s an amazingly delicious and comforting meal. Add grits for a full experience. We have food trucks here that sell only chicken and waffles.

  46. BakerB921 Avatar

    It’s not only a thing, it’s a great thing!
