Just wondering what the process is like, I’ve heard that most rich businessmen who want to run for Congress hire the most expensive consultants others can’t afford. So just wondering, are they really needed to run or?

Hiring a political consultant is only marginally more effective than hiring a business consultant.
You need it if you don’t have a reasonably diverse circle of competent people you can already rely on.
>Are political consultants really needed to run for Congress?
Not needed, but…
Is it so hard to believe that they would be beneficial? They are simply experts in their field. Wouldn’t we expect a political consultant to know a thing or two their candidates might not know?
There are different kinds of political consultants:
There might be those that can advise or coach on image or media
There are those that can provide voter research
There are those that can research specific political topics to provide details and pros / cons on positions
.. and more.
They can all be helpful but they cost and not everyone needs every type.
I mean it’s probably in practice necessary to hire experts in running a campaign in order to have a reasonable shot of winning. I don’t know if there is some sort of substitute profession besides political consultants that could be used instead or if anyone doing that would be considered a political consultant.
Id say the 2024 election was a pretty good argument against putting too much stock in consultants. Sidelining Walz is one of the dumbest choices I’ve seen in a while.
Only if you want a chance at winning.
Essentially, it’s about trying to, in the most crassly maneuvering “people are stupid sheep” to be manipulated way possible.
Presuming you want a House seat, first it’s about shopping for a district to go win.
You go get a house to establish residence there, even if you don’t live there actually.
Have to find who is vulnerable, who is retiring, what can you brand yourself as vs the type of electorate that exists there.
Think marketing surveys, big data harvesting – all trying to figure out what will “SELL” in the most favorable district and then making your brand, image, and everything about you like the ideal candidate for that district.
Yes, political consultants can make all the difference when you are trying to effectively engineer a winner that doesn’t actually have real positions on everything and only cares about winning to get the seat.
It’s political consultants that will tell you to wear a blue dress shirt and roll up the sleeves during your summer campaign. The blue shirt is less “white collar” and shows armpit stains which are somehow respected by people because they convey how hard you’re out there working!
