Are the Democratic and Republican parties switching places?

r/

By this I mean; is the Democratic Party becoming the white, wealthy party and the Republican the diverse, poor party.

I’m aware that plenty of poor and wealthy party people support both parties. I just mean that the wealthy (by which, I mean upper middle class) will start voting for the Democratic Party and the poor for the Republicans.

I believe that the 2024 election may indicate this, with minority and poor voters swinging largely to Trump. However, this might just be another wild and unpredictable side effect of Trump.

What do you think?

I don’t think that the Republican party is becoming substantially more diverse. They’ve picked up some minority votes in the last election, but racial and religious minorities still overwhelmingly vote for Democrats. Many of the demographics that did flip Republican have been burned by Trump, so I wouldn’t expect that trend to continue.

The last election was about prices. I don’t think there’s much good reason to read further into those tea leaves.

No, but they are shifting. We are witnessing the end of the Sixth Party System.

Our electoral system incentivizes two parties, but those two parties don’t have to appeal to the exact same people over time. Right now, Trump is changing the Republican Party in a way that increases their appeal to low-information working class voters, while alienating other Republicans. This will probably result in a permanent shift in which the Republican base of support looks very different than it did in 2004 or 1984.

The Republican Party is becoming more diverse but still remains heavily white

One could say that the Dems are becoming the party of the poor and upper class while the GOP are more the party of the middle class, going off of the 2024 exit polls

But its arguably more a matter of depolarization than reverse polarization, if that makes sense.

Its also unclear if Trump’s Hooverian trade policy will be able to win the middle and lower classes (or even just the middle class) in the long run, though in this post truth anti elitist world, its possible that the ignorant masses will embrace populist protectionism no matter how much it hurts them

Elon Musk and Donald Trump are diverse and poor now?

    What a world!

Whomever is voting gop, they’re still white elite. Trump nominations have been 87% white 84% men or something like that
