Arguing online is awesome

r/

Too many of us go through life keeping the peace, being nice and not speaking up.
We get subjected to strange opinions, weird takes and constant dumb statements. But it’s almost always in our best interest to just smile and say “that’s crazy dude” or “wow, that’s really interesting”.
On the flip side, many more of us go through life spouting these strange opinions, having nothing but weird takes and constantly making dumb or incorrect statements. But nobody calls us on it. People just smile at us and act like what we said is totally normal.

The internet is our leveling field- a chance to try and humble a stranger or better yet, a chance be humbled and told our weird take is actually just fucking weird.

    I disagree

Then you realize there’s no point cause 90% of people who argue are bots designed to drive engagement.

    You’ll get tired of it.

Something tells me it rarely works that way. I spent too much time probing Qanon believers for answers. I had a lot of laughs, but ultimately ended up feeling sad for humanity.

I don’t think this is unpopular. Take my downvote.

I dunno, I get started and then usually mid-sentence realize “Wait…I don’t care”

Pushing that boulder up the hill is awesome

  8. Hand_of_Doom1970 Avatar

This both a good, counter-intuitive take, and also unpopular. I will click upvote twice.

I get the arguing out of my system on here so I don’t have to bother people in real life with it

Is the right room for an argument?

    I’ve told you once

    No, you didn’t

    Yes, I did

    When?

    Just now

    No, you didn’t

    Yes, I did

    No, you didn’t

I mean, I get what you’re saying, you do have to button up in real life, but it’s what’s led to our political polarization and anger (at least in the US) I feel like when I DO argue in real life, we have to use a bit more tact and try to be more civilized rather than name call another person and live in our respective echo chambers. Arguing in real life helps bring us a little closer to the middle.

I fucking love it, probably why I’ve been on this platform for so long.

Nothing like slam dunking on someone who’s being a dick.

I used to love it but with a few caveats. It was almost always with people I knew from the political science department at my university and we loved arguing over political issues. The thing is we were all arguing based on evidence and most importantly we were always still friends in the end. It never turned personal. Sometimes I found that with random strangers online but it has become so exceptionally rare I just don’t bother anymore. Especially after the pandemic.

Arguing online used to be a lot more fun when there was a guaranteed human on the other end you could troll, but now it’s at least 50/50 AI and bots which kind of makes it pointless.

Yeah agreed! It’s a shame some people ruin it sometimes online but I love a lively debate! And you just can’t have them with many people in person bc there is simply not enough time or it’s not appropriate to call someone out. I have personally learned a lot in my life by engaging in a debate/argument with people.

Upvote this strange and unpopular take. Kinda love it

  17. knallpilzv2 Avatar

    Yeah, it’s fun.

    I wouldn’t use reddit otherwise.

I like it because I am awful at debating/arguing in real life. I freeze up and stutter and it makes it very hard to come across as intelligent. Online, I can take my time before responding and make sure I’m saying what I want to say.

Also, it’s awkward to ask someone for a source mid-conversation and wait for them to find it right in front of you.

If you get called slurs, you win

  20. Cold-Contribution-50 Avatar

Some fucking people this platform has, eh?

  21. VenusHalley Avatar

You are totally wrong. Fight me

  22. Oh_My_Monster Avatar

I would agree. The only problem is most people online will retreat to their algorithmic bubble or groupthink. I’m not convinced that calling people out really makes them reevaluate their position so much as entrenches them in it.

    Still satisfying though.
