I am a mental health professional. I was one of three recovery coaches working for a company that provided aftercare to families of addicts after an intervention. Families have a contract that promises 90 days of aftercare. My boss decided to end the in-house aftercare program and contract it out. Monday of last week, without notice, he fired one of the coaches. He made no arrangements ahead of time for her groups or individual sessions to be covered. He then dumped this coach’s client in the lap of myself and the other remaining coach. We were bombarded with questions we had no answers for. We finally found out that our jobs were also being eliminated and he was outsourcing only part of the aftercare program. We were not told not to say anything. Initially, the other coach and I referred questions to our boss and CEO. However, both boss and CEO were ignoring the clients. I have an ethical obligation as a mental health professional to terminate properly and ensure continuity of care. I sent out an email to my clients explaining that there would be a transition in their care. My boss called me and fired me on the spot and said he is going to sue me. Does he have a case?
