I remember this being very common when I was a kid. There’s even many intersections I specifically remember being held signs instead of stop signs
Extremely low traffic areas rarely actually need a stop sign and could just use a yield sign that people could slow and roll through. It’s even more true in the middle of nowhere boonies on back roads and such.
As for 4 way stops. We need to get ride of those. They see no actual purpose.

Do you live in British Columbia bc, Canada? This is a serious problem here lol
Are we gonna have any plans to replace 4 way stops with anything or are we just gonna trust drivers to let each other go in an orderly fashion because they will not and I can immediately start seeing my local schools breaking down every morning from this one change alone.
This seems to be a problem everywhere. I’m in Australia and think this all the time. There’s a stop sign at the end of my street which isn’t needed.
Also don’t think this is an unpopular opinion at all.
i talk to my family about this with my family from time to time and they think im crazy
They should all be replaced with round-a-bouts, WAY more efficient
Well in the middle of nowhere the stop signs actually make quite a bit of sense. They’re usually only on parts where you can’t see the other cars until you’re there. Yields on the other hand, you can blow through those going 120km/h just fine because they usually have long sight lines
I lived in a home in front of a yield sign for 20 years. People routinely blew through them, hitting pedestrians and causing countless accidents. Was replaced with a stop sign and for the past 5 years there hasn’t been a single accident
People be blowing through stop signs everywhere all the time
Since moving to London UK from nowhere Ontario Canada, I think I’ve seen maybe 7 stop signs in the city. If a metropolitan area like this can have so few stop signs (having mostly yields and roundabouts) I don’t understand why smaller traffic areas can’t.
Ok so in low traffic most people don’t fully stop unless there’s another car. For the first time an unpopular opinion upsets me. People say there’s no purpose but i’m betting the stop signs put up there were written in blood.
If you are from US I fully agree as European. We don’t have nearly half as much stop signs as you do. Usually it’s main road which can go without slowing down and secondary road either way yield, stop signs are rare – usually when there is poor visibility
Too many people see a yield sign and just keep going. Either assuming there won’t be other cars or they’ll be able to make it across if they don’t slow down. Too many fatalities get yields changed to stop.
I have given you an upvote since I disagree. Now, one of my exes was from a town of about 75,000 people. I went there a few times to see her family with her. The best thing about the town was that after about 9 or 10 at night, all the stoplights in town started flashing. So the main roads would just flash yellow to watch out and side roads switched to flashing red to stop. I’ve never seen that before and made so much sense. I’ve always been a night owl, and it sucks when you stuck at a light with no one around
You put a lot in trust in most drivers knowing what yield even means
