This Man Bought His House Before the HOA Existed, and Watching Him Shred Their “Fines” is Pure Serotonin

We all know the type. The person who peeks through their blinds to make sure your trash can is brought in by 5:01 PM. HOAs were theoretically designed to keep property values up, but in reality, they are often just adult playgrounds for power-hungry neighbors with too much time and not enough hobbies. But there is one thing better than complying with an HOA: being legally exempt from one while living right in the middle of it. One homeowner on Reddit is living the dream, and his neighbors are absolutely losing their minds over it.

The OP (Original Poster) bought his house years ago. He was the pioneer. The first settler. The real estate company built his house on speculation before the rest of the subdivision even existed. Because he was the original king of the castle, his contract explicitly stated that there was no Home Owners Association. He is grandfathered in. This is the golden ticket. He basically has a “Get Out of Jail Free” card laminated in his mortgage papers, and frankly, we are jealous.

Naturally, the neighborhood boom happened, and the new neighbors decided to form a club. But they seem to have a collective case of amnesia regarding the OP’s contract. They treat him like an unruly teenager who needs a curfew. They have tried to fine him for everything under the sun. We are talking about fines for cutting his grass at the “wrong” time and—get this—having Amazon packages delivered on Sundays. Yes, apparently receiving mail on the Lord’s Day is a crime against property values now.

It gets pettier. The OP owns an extra tract of land because he wanted a bigger yard to build a shooting range (he lives in the South, so this checks out). The neighbors hate that he has extra space and vehicles parked on his own property. But the straw that broke the camel’s back was a pile of wood. The OP runs a small woodworking hobby business and keeps treated lumber on a shelf outside his garage.

Now, his house faces the road, not the other houses. Nobody has to stare at his lumber unless they are actively snooping. But the HOA busybodies decided it was an “eyesore” and marched over to demand its removal. This is the moment where most of us would panic, but the OP stood his ground with the confidence of a man who knows the law is on his side.

He actually offered them a peace treaty. He told them that if they lightened up about the Amazon boxes and the grass police, he would consider moving the wood pile. A fair trade, right? You leave me alone, I’ll make my garage prettier. But HOAs do not negotiate. They doubled down, telling him he needed to address all the issues, stop the Sunday deliveries, and move his truck. Then, they made the fatal mistake of handing him a “ticket.”

The OP did what every single one of us wishes we could do. He took the ticket, trashed it, and told them to get the “F” off his property. It is a thing of beauty. He didn’t argue. He didn’t appeal to the board. He essentially told them to take their bylaws and shove them. They called him an a**hole for his “unreasonable behavior,” which is rich coming from people trying to ban weekend deliveries.

The audacity of these neighbors is truly something to behold. They genuinely believe that their little club rules override a legal contract. They want him to play by rules he never agreed to, simply because they want everyone to look the same. It is the ultimate “crabs in a bucket” mentality. They are mad that he is free, and they are trying to drag him down into the miserable world of beige paint swatches and approved mailbox designs.

So, is the OP the ahole? Absolutely not. He is a hero. He is the resistance. If you move into a neighborhood after someone else has already established their homestead, you don’t get to demand they change their lifestyle to fit your new aesthetic.

What would you do if an HOA tried to fine you when you weren’t even a member? Would you have trashed the ticket, or would you have framed it just to make them mad? Let us know in the comments if you think the OP should build a bigger fence just to spite them!

NTA your a smart person for not giving in HOAs are full of crazy people who don’t know how to stay in their own lanes. I would be getting really petty, crazy lawn ornaments, paint colors, lights, i would even put in a over the top garden or playground for my kids. Call them Arnold for their bad terminator comment lol.
