Pet ownership is a massive responsibility that some people treat like a fun little shopping spree. We all know someone who watches a movie featuring a cute animal and suddenly decides they need that exact species in their living room. But animals are living creatures with complex needs, not aesthetic props for your social media. One husband on Reddit recently had to step in and make a major medical decision for his dog behind his wife’s back, and once you hear the tragic backstory, you will totally understand why.
The Original Poster is a thirty eight year old guy who grew up surrounded by cats and dogs. He knows exactly how much work goes into raising a happy and healthy pet. His thirty six year old wife, on the other hand, grew up as an only child and had absolutely zero experience with animals. But she watched the movie “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale” and suddenly decided she absolutely had to have a Japanese Akita. She joined online group chats and convinced herself this was a brilliant idea.
Akitas are notoriously difficult dogs. They are massive, incredibly strong, and have fierce personalities that require an experienced handler. The OP tried to be the voice of reason. He suggested they start with a smaller breed for her first pet, but his wife was adamant. She made the classic promise that she would do all the work and take full responsibility for the dog. Spoiler alert: she absolutely did not.
They got the puppy during the OP’s off season from construction work. They started socializing the dog, but then the pandemic hit. The dog grew into a massive, full size Akita with zero ongoing interaction with other dogs. As a result, he became incredibly reactive and aggressive whenever he saw another pup on a walk. And because he is a giant breed, the wife physically could not handle him. She completely abandoned her promise to walk him, dumping all the daily exercise and obedience training squarely on her husband’s shoulders.

Dealing with a reactive, aggressive giant breed is exhausting. The OP logically suggested they get the dog neutered to reduce his testosterone and calm him down. But the wife refused. In a completely unhinged twist, she decided she wanted to become a backyard breeder. She wanted to breed their highly reactive, aggressive dog. They waited until he was almost two years old, and the wife arranged a meetup with a family who had a female Akita.
Just like with the walking, the wife outsourced all the actual labor of this breeding experiment to her husband. The female dog was dropped off at their house for an entire week. The OP was left juggling a strange female dog alongside his own aggressive male dog while his wife played the role of a completely uninvolved manager.
Then the unthinkable happened. The breeding attempt was a catastrophic failure. The original post glosses over the horrifying medical details, but the female dog literally did not survive the process. She died. The other family lost their pet, and only two puppies made it out alive. You would think causing the death of another family’s beloved pet would be a massive wake up call for the wife to abandon her backyard breeding fantasy.
Unbelievably, it was not a wake up call. After that literal tragedy, the OP revisited the idea of getting their dog fixed. His wife flat out refused again because she actually wanted to breed him a second time. The sheer audacity and delusion required to want a do over after killing someone else’s dog is staggering. The OP finally hit his limit. He realized he loved his dog, but he refused to participate in any more reckless breeding schemes. He packed up the Akita, took him to the vet, and got him snipped without her permission.
The results were instantaneous and magical. The dog stopped pulling on walks. He stopped acting aggressive towards other dogs and now just calmly sniffs them. The OP vastly improved his dog’s quality of life and protected the neighborhood in one swoop. But instead of being grateful that her husband solved the problem she created, the wife is furious. Months later, she is still holding a grudge because he did not “listen” to her.
The OP is an absolute hero and definitely not the ahole. His wife treats dog ownership like a fun little hobby she can opt in and out of, while completely ignoring the real world consequences of her actions. Getting that dog fixed was the only responsible choice left. What would you do if your partner wanted to backyard breed a reactive dog after a fatal first attempt? Would you book the vet appointment in secret, or would you try to reason with them? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
