Being charged with unarmed burglary in MA

r/

Entered my ex gfs apt in MA through an unlocked balcony door after calling / ringing buzzer and trying to have a conversation. After doing so realized how big a mistake I was making and left the premises. While driving home she called me and asked me to come back so that we could talk. asked her if it was so she could have me arrested, she assured me that she wasn’t and just wanted to talk. As soon as I arrived was ambushed by 3 police officers. She now currently has a restraining order against me, I’m wearing a GPS monitor on my ankle and awaiting my next court date.

I have no prior convictions and was appointed a public defender, work full-time, am in therapy twice a week, see a psychiatrist once a month and am planning to enroll in a “Better at Home” healthy relationship program, this afternoon at therapy.

My question is, should I trust a PD through this or would it be better to try and figure out how some how some way to hire a criminal lawyer – that I can’t afford. The sentencing in MA can range from 1 to 20 years for this charge.

I really don’t want to goto jail.

You need a lawyer. You do not trust the police. Their job is not to do the right thing. Their job is to make a case against you so that the DA can file charges and win. The DA’s job is to convict you of something.

You need to get out in front of this, and to do that, you have to have a lawyer.

I am a retired prosecutor. I retired because there is no room in the system for lawyers who want to do the right thing. So, I retired.
