Man. I had the best ride along yesterday with a sheriffs department . Which was a breath of fresh air because the one I had two weeks with another sheriff department was so trash.
The deputy I rode with yesterday was very informative, knowledgeable , gave me a tour of the county. Took me in the office and introduced me to the staff etc
The lieutenant called me today and said that the deputy spoke highly of me; as well as the ladies in the office. I’m supposed to have my oral interview with them in two weeks. I feel super motivated.
Vs
The Deputy forfrom two weeks ago literally spent the whole ride just complaining about how pointless the job. Like LITERALLY every call we responded to he would said something along the lines of “there Is no reason for me to even be doing this” or “it’s a waste of time”
The officer who you ride with truly makes the difference.

That’s good to hear. Shows why it’s important for supervisors to pick good people to host a ride along.
I normally enjoyed ride alongs but a couple were less than welcome. We started a non sworn pastoral program for our agency back in the 80’s and one of the first rode with me on his first night. We became great friends and to this day, even living states apart, we’re still great friends. One ride along was sent home after a couple hours as I just could not tolerate the smell coming from him. I believe he was a CJ student at a local community college. Again, early 80’s. I was made an FTO so I came to enjoy the training aspect of my rookies as well as sharing info with ride alongs. Then I went to K9 forever and dealt with barking dogs.
I love having riders. I still complain about dumb calls, but it’s fun to show people what we do and why. No matter how many dumb calls I have in a day or how frustrated I am by them, I still love this job.
