For context, my bf (16M) and I (17M) (both white) have been dating for about three months. We live 5 hours away from each other and, other than this incident, everything has been going good. We call pretty much every night and hes very sweet, which is why this came out of nowhere for me.
A few weeks ago, he made a very racist joke to a group of African American people in a group chat he was in and told me about it, thinking it was funny. The joke was more or less calling them slaves and making a joke about whipping them. Again, he thought this was hilarious and was laughing. I was super shocked since he’s never acted like this before and immediately told him it wasnt okay and that it upset me. he got apologetic immediately and we dropped it.
The whole thing has been eating at me. I’d be upset regardless of this next part, but I have a black brother, sister-in-law and niece, all of which my boyfriend knows about. Even though it may have been ‘just a joke’, idk how comfortable i am having him around my family if thats the kind of thing he feels is funny. His whole family is also racist ive learned (ive heard his niece say the N Word multiple times), which doesn’t help at all. Other than this, hes so sweet and thoughtful, but i just cant get past this. What should i do? any kindness and/or advice is much appreciated, thank you.
