Personally I would be honest and tell him that you’re looking for another job If he’s a decent boss he’ll want to know why and maybe fix some of the issues? I always believe honesty is best.
I’ve unfortunately been in this same situation. I was at a toxic job with bad upper managment/no HR and was looking around. I told my then boss I was updating it in case of new positions in the company for promotions.
just say with all the issues in the market i thought i would be ready in case of any layoffs. then apologise about doing it on company time you’re just really anxious about potential lay offs.
