Bought an “upgrade” ring after we got engaged…

r/

How would you all feel/react if your future MIL bought an upgrade ring just weeks after you got engaged to her son? From the same jeweler….from across the country….. oh and did I mention the same diamond cut???
She would never do this to the golden child’s spouse though, of course😊

“Wow I’m so flattered you liked my ring that much, you wanted to get one just like mine!” But I’m petty like that. That’s crazy. What does your future hubby think? He could totally call her out on how weird that is.

Work into the conversation ‘imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness’ – I can’t remember who said that, do you know, MIL. (Oscar Wilde) And watch her head explode.

Hmmmmmm. I have some suspicions that her ring was part of the deal in getting your ring. Her “upgrade” is it a brand new diamond? If not, they could’ve also done a buy 2 deal to get the better deal for you. Still, it’s tacky as can be to report back to you guys that she got an upgrade even if your fiance had worked on this with his dad or her. You and your fiancé deserve your moments for that occasion. An “upgrade” should be private between 2 people….the giver and receiver….again, super tacky and showboaty or maybe I’m just old fashioned bc everyone and their mother (pun intended) have to share everything on sm these days.

This reminds me of my mom’s side of the family where their love language is jealousy.

I would have looked right at my SO and said, “I TOLD you this ring was an old lady style!”

if your future husband blows this off as “just the way she is” ….I’d be pissed.

What does he say about her dupe ring?

Have a T-shirt made that says, “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.” and wear it to the next family gathering.
