Brazilians: is the stereotype about Brazilians being very focused on their body, hygiene and fitness true?

    Pretty much, yeah.

Queria que fossemos mais, não chegando em extremos tem gente que exagera na academia. Ainda tem gente fedorenta por aqui e que se beneficiaria de três idas por semana a academia.

  3. infomapaz Avatar

its a pretty hot and wet country, good hygiene seems logical.

  4. ruines_humaines Avatar

    Middle class stereotype, yes.

Let’s take a look at some numbers:

90 million people in Brazil don’t have access to basic sanitation, so these people probably have a hard time being very focused on hygiene, even if they want to.

Now about fitness, about 20% of the population is obese and 55% are overweight. Again, doesn’t seem like the stereotype is true.

It’s always important to note one thing, when you’re discussing things in English with Brazilians on the internet, you’re most likely talking to middle/high class people and they live in a very different world than the rest.

If you want to, you can go on Youtube and look for those videos where people walk in São Paulo or any city really, you’ll see that Brazil isn’t really full of jacked dudes and girls with athletic bodies. Most people don’t really have the time to focus on their bodies.

Yes. But this is Reddit so you’ll have people saying some deluded nonsense.

  6. BohemiaDrinker Avatar

Body and hygiene, yes. Fitness, not necessarily.

  7. brazucadomundo Avatar

Yes. Even passport bros complain they got no chance over there.

  8. Altruistic_Product50 Avatar

Have a Brazilian stepmom and this is absolutely true in her case.

Edit: y’all aren’t really helping to mitigate the whole “over sexualizing/fetishizing Latin American women stereotype” with some of these comments lol.

For some, yes. I workout every day.

“It is a disgrace to grow old through sheer carelessness before seeing what manner of man you may become by developing your bodily strength and beauty to their highest limit.”

Kinda? More than the average gringo I would say. Hygiene especially.

Socially, yes. We joke about it but the fitness culture and personal hygiene are very "strong" in Brazil. I obviously do not know the whole world, but I have traveled around and I live outside Brazil now. Having the chance to talk and live with many non-Brazilian people, (mostly Europeans) I have to admit that not every country is into the "shower everyday" thing. Much less shower twice a day as I do. I shower before going to work in the morning and shower when I get back after the gym.

Fitness is pretty strong too, the beauty standards in Brazil are all about men being tall, muscular, etc. For women it’s about tiny waist, no belly, and a body like this (the face, skin color, hair, are up to your taste).

Of course none of these stereotypes are written in stone, a lot of people like more skinny men or women, maybe with extra Kg, but the "main stereotype" is that.

I live in Argentina now, most women considered "hot" in here would be "too thin" for most Brazilian people but, again, it’s up to personal taste. The same applies for men here, I don’t feel that Argentine women are very into muscular men as Brazilian women do.

About hygiene, having a bad smell, dirty teeth, greasy hair, or anything like that is a big no-no for most people. The average Brazilian will visit the dentist regularly and we are taught to brush and floss at least 2 times a day or after every meal.

  12. AgeOfHorus Avatar

I’d say Brazil has a very “body positive” culture

As far as hygiene goes, yes, it’s true the vast majority of people shower a bunch of times a day (as someone else said, no surprise, given how hot the weather is)

When it comes to fitness, depends on your age, demographics and income. Middle class in cities like Rio and Florianópolis are very focused on jogging and gym culture.

  13. Dramatic-Border3549 Avatar

On average, yes. On the extremes I think also yes

I went to the US once and entered a walmart. I saw a person so fat that he had a little scooter or something because he couldn’t walk. I’ve never seen anything like that in my 30 years of life in Brasil, I was in awe of that massive unit of a person

  14. HzPips Avatar

Half true, it is socially expected, but we have plenty of stinky people in public

  15. Significant-Yam9843 Avatar

After USA, we are among the countries with the highest number of plastic surgeries in the world.

I’d say yes, for body, fitness and hygiene.

  16. Significant-Yam9843 Avatar

By the way, I guess in my whole life there wasn’t one single night that I left home for partying without brushing my teeth.

Any brazilian relates to that? Ahahah

It’s like if ure about to go out, brush your teeth first. It’s literally our common sense here Eheheh

  17. I_Nosferatu_I Avatar

    Stereotypes are just that, stereotypes.

Not all Brazilians are fitness and hygiene obsessed. We have all kinds of people here, we are a normal country like any other. Not a stereotype.

  18. Atuk-77 Avatar

True, I have met a lot of Brazilians in NJ and that stereotype applies even to those who are always late on the rent.

  19. Owlmaath Avatar

    Sure, about hygiene.
But fitness? Focused on my body?
    nah not really

  20. txtxs Avatar

yes it is. almost everyone sees going to the gym or doing some kind of workout as something that should be part of their routine (even if they are not doing it).

  21. Econemxa Avatar

    Hygiene 99%

    Body and fitness 30-60%

  22. yaardiegyal Avatar

Idk but these stereotypes are interesting ngl cause I never knew about it.

  23. RedJacket2020s Avatar

Most Brazilians I’ve met were super groomed and clean. Not like everyone is gonna be like that

  24. ricklyle Avatar

Yes it is. Brazilians do it because they don’t want to be looked down upon. Brazilians like to say they don’t go to places where there’s ugly people.

  25. TangerineDowntown374 Avatar

The fitness stereotype applies to the upper class only, the people you see jogging at the beach and who can afford to go to the gym on weekdays. 90% of the population is pretty normal, and eat whatever they can, só often end up slightly overweight.

More and more young men are overweight due to toxic Burger culture spreading.

  26. matheushpsa Avatar

Yes, but the devil is in the details.

Even though Brazilians are clearly concerned about personal hygiene and appearance, there is a factor that has already been studied and cannot be ignored:

    Ostentation by the upper classes.

I would like to be very offensive and biased:

Most (with notable and precious exceptions) of our elites and middle classes, compared to the BRICS and NATO, are not very fond of books, museums, travel or even collecting.

You may be negatively surprised by well-off Brazilians (with expensive college degrees, owners of clinics, who sent their children on exchange to Ireland, cars in the garage) who are incapable of holding an elevator conversation about culture, arts or even local politics.

The body is often used as an implicit marker of success, almost like a "Look, poor thing, I worked hard to be where I am, my body is beautiful, I am capable of athletic feats, even naked we know where each other belongs…"

  27. Phodeu Avatar

The fitness thing applies mostly for coastal cities because you want to show your six pack on the beach.

Hygiene applies for (almost) all Brazilians, most of the country is pretty humid and hot.

  28. demidemian Avatar

    Yes, also HIV epidemic.

  29. KobeBeatJesus Avatar

If they were concerned about their fitness they wouldn’t go through with the myriad of cosmetic endeavors like synthol injections. It’s vanity. They’re vain.

  30. jenesuisunefemme Avatar

I would say yes. Its like I know I’m kinda fat and I think constantly about training and being skinny. The gyms are always packed everywhere you go
