I wish we’d hold our treasonists as accountable as south America does 😂

    How many is a Brazillion?

  3. oholandesvoador Avatar

I feel great. I wish he dont get freed in a couple years like most politicians in Brazil.

  4. evil_burrito Avatar

Wait, trying to subvert an election is a crime, you say? Prison, you say?

  5. -elemental Avatar

I wish him a life just healthy enough for him to enjoy all those 27 years in prison.

  6. dosadiexperiment Avatar

27 years seems pretty light for treason, but better than nothing.

  7. HoneydewMiss Avatar

Wild how he went from “tropical Trump” to “Brazilian prison edition.” Kinda feels like the finale nobody saw coming but everyone lowkey expected.

  8. Johanneum1906 Avatar

Good on Brazil for actually jailing the fucker for trying an insurrection

Also, I thought that 27 years was a little light for trying an insurrection and wanting to overturn an election, but Bolsonaro is 70, so he’d probably die in prison if he isn’t let out early, and even then it’s

A lot of people have asked me, what I think the sentence for an insurrection and illegal overturning of a legitimate election should be, and I would’ve said 40 years. That’s why I said 27 years was a little light. It’s a harsh sentence, and I’m fine with him getting it, but given that Bolsonaro did his own January 6th, I would’ve gone further with the sentencing

  9. _Lus Avatar

We held a massive street party yesterday in Rio downtown, and I’m sure lots of people celebrated it as well across the country. So I’d say we feel pretty good, it restored some trust in our institutions, and it strengthened our democracy.

He is a conspirator, a compulsive liar and kept spreading tons of fake news muddying the waters constantly. With him and some of his allies in jail there will be space to fix the damage he caused. So it’s a huge relief.

  10. jnighy Avatar

Feels like justice finally being made. But honestly, Bolsonaro is not the most important thing. For the first time ever, member of the armed forces were convicted for a crime against democracy. And the armed forces have a looong history of attacks against our democracy, including a 21 year long dictatorship, whose leaders were never judged. Feels like a page being turned.

  11. _6u5t4v0 Avatar

Considering the number of people he mocked and let die during the Covid pandemic, saying it was just a “little flu”, 27 years was very little. But better than nothing

  12. BubbhaJebus Avatar

He not only attempted to overturn an election; he was planning to murder Lula and Supreme Court justices.

    He deserves prison for life.

If only we had the balls to bring another coup attempter to justice in the US. You had one job, Garland.

  13. laaplandros Avatar

Question: “Brazilians, how do you feel about this Brazilian issue?”

Answers: “I’m American and I’m going to talk about American issues.”

This post might be brigaded by the cesspool that is r/brasilivre.

They not only wanted to do a coup, they were plotting to assassinate their adversaries who won the election (current President and VP) and a Justice from our Supreme Court (Alexandre de Moraes, the main target for Trump’s threats). Their convictions are more than warranted.

However, nothing is over yet. They can appeal and, if they manage to get the case to the full court (11 Justices instead of the 5 from the group / board that gave this conviction), I still think Bolsonaro will be convicted – but then he will be judged also by the two Justices he put in place, and they will stall the trial for as long as possible. Finally, the likely presidential candidate for the opposition for next year’s elections, assuming Bolsonaro is convicted and can’t run, is Tarcisio de Freitas – which has close ties to Bolsonaro and will 100% pardon him if he wins.

I’m really hoping for a centrist candidate to appear and gain traction, but as of this moment we don’t have one.

Also Trump will likely double down on our tariffs, if not worse. Bolsonaro getting arrested doesn’t sit well with him because they followed the same playbook. The only difference, really, is that our Supreme Court isn’t filled with conservatives (yet).

  15. AokiHagane Avatar

Honestly, I don’t think we celebrated enough. We should call a whole week off for everyone.

It’s worth remembering that this motherfucker was responsible for at least 350k deaths during the COVID pandemic. He should be prosecuted for that too, but we’ll take the 27 years for now.

Brazil is the biggest democracy in the Americas.

  16. No-Focus-2178 Avatar

Nice to see that there are still civilized that actually hold their political officials accountable for staging a coup

  17. igpila Avatar

The same way I feel after a warm bath followed by a massage and a fancy dinner.

  19. Aplicacion Avatar

Great! Amazing! That cunt tried to overthrow a democratically elected government, not only plotting to assassinate the president, vice-president and a Supreme Court justice, but throw in the garbage the will of the people and our fundamental right to choose our representatives because he couldn’t bear the fact that we didn’t choose him. And his malicious inaction led to 700,000+ deaths from COVID during the pandemic.

Let’s hope it sticks, and let’s hope he rots there for the rest of his miserable life along with many of his 7 friends that were also convicted.

But the most important thing is that, for the first time in its 525-year history, Brazil has finally forced an authoritarian bitch to face the consequences for their attempted coup. No longer will an attempt like this be dealt with a slap on the wrist, no general amnesty so that they can try again in a few years. 3 generals, 1 admiral and a former president/army captain are facing justice, our institutions are holding them accountable and history will remember them for what they are: cowards.

And it also helps that we told Trump he can suck our dick and balls because we won’t be subjugated.

This is still far from over, of course, but for right now it’s celebration time!

  20. MasterBlasterO_O Avatar

I watched the trial and celebrated like it was the World Cup final

  21. gorillamutila Avatar

I’m a conservative (of the old burkean kind) Brazilian and I’m cautiously happy.

On one hand, no one in my lifetime did more damage to all the causes I believe in than this sad excuse of a man.

-He made a mockery of my faith by using it for his base political purposes.

-He destroyed the anti-corruption investigations happening in the country only to protect his equally corrupt family.

-He tried a coup d’etat in our very defective democracy instead of doing things conservatively through slow and careful change because he couldn’t accept loosing an election.

-He actively disregarded fiscal good-sense for ridiculous short-term and useless political gains in a country that has been mired in economic stagnation for over a decade now.

-And perhaps more damning of all, his utter callousness and sociopathic behavior during the pandemic, disregarding the health and safety of millions of his countrymen (and encouraging many to act the same way) while bodies piled up in cemeteries.

On the other hand. Our politicians are known to stay arrested for very short times and it still remains to be seen whether he’ll be locked up at all.

  22. Headlessoberyn Avatar

Honestly? Feels fucking great dude. But you know what’s even better? Seeing a bunch of americans in every post going “wellp guess brazil is the real democracy” “we’re worse than brazil now” “america learn your lesson” and so on.

This idea of America being the bastions of freedom and development, calling everybody else “third world” while being completely neglectful of how your actions, and your political movements, were the one thing causing most of the world’s conflict during 20th and 21th century. What a farse.

You guys meddled with our economy, backed up a dictatorship that set us back 50 years in the past and completely gutted our ability to industrialize, all while funding a massive worldwide disinformation campaign, with the ideia of selling to the “developed world” that we are shit, will always be shit, and it’s ok to explore us because that’s what we’re here for. “Banana republic”, as you like to call us, right?

Now you guys are stuck on a disfunctional political system, with streets filled with junkies and an apathetic state of affairs. Not that we are in a much different spot, but at least we didn’t pillage the world for a hundred years just to end up in the same boat of shitness.

Even at your worst, you guys still make it all about yourselves. That’s the true american way. At least, now, we can kinda poke fun at it. You couldn’t even arrest the guy that pissed all over your “great democracy”. That IS a funny joke, makes it funnier that he’s such a comedic idiot as well. Yeah i’m petty, it’s hard not to be these days, but catharsis is also a cold dish.

  23. darkkian3x3 Avatar

Happy as fuck. This moron caused lots of deaths during the pandemic and for many absurd reasons this dumb idiot became the main leader of the far right.
To hell with him and his whole family of criminals.

  24. OverexposedPotato Avatar

It’s great to finally see my right-leaning coworkers admit that trying to strip governmental institutions of their power is bad, and that Lula taking an open stance against trump was a breath of fresh air after so many spineless governments and infighting of political parties.

I was never proud to be Brazilian, until the moment Trump tried to fuck with us and our country showed we ain’t gonna take shit from anyone

  25. Caradebunda Avatar

    Exhilarated. Relieved. Hopeful

I feel happy. My country isn’t perfect by any means but he fucked around and found out. Many other politicians deserve the same fate but, it’s a start. One at a time.

  30. brazilian_irish Avatar

I feel my trust in justice was partially restored. Partially because I’m skeptical, and I know so many more should be facing jail.

I feel proud to be Brazilian once again (or maybe for the first time in my life)..

  31. OkWorldliness3742 Avatar

    Biden’s AG f*cked up majorly

  32. PinkPussycatPower Avatar

It was the best news of the decade! About time.

Another great take is that Trump’s threats and tariffs backfired to some good part of the population that was against the current government. When Lula stood up to the USA’s pressure, our president gained respect and support from people who would not sympathize with him otherwise. I REALLY hope this makes his reelection more possible, so we can continue fighting the far right that has been destroying everything it touches.

  33. machado34 Avatar

There having been parties on streets for 3 consecutive days so far. It’s just a shame it was only 27 years, should have been more.  Brazilian law says he’s eligible to be released after 1/3 of the sentence, so it’s more like only 9 years if he’s well behaved in prison

  34. 4look4rd Avatar

I spent half of my life in Brazil and half in the US. I’m extremely proud of Brazil.

Back in the 90s I remember my dad saying that things worked in the US because of rule of law, and even politicians could get arrested if caught doing something wrong, while in Brazil everything ends in pizza.

While I’m proud of Brazil, I’m even more disappointed in the complete erosion of American institutions. The rosy glasses I had about the US in 90s have been completely shattered, and while i really love this place too it’s hard not to feel disappointed.

  35. nonmajesticphoenix Avatar

Amazing. He should have gotten 54, though.

  36. fourangers Avatar

Back when he was a president, he was responsible for 700000 deaths due to COVID and when people questioned if he’d do anything to prevent these deaths, he said “So what? I’m not a gravedigger.”

So yeah, serves him right. I’m so glad that our justice system, as flawed as it is, worked this time.

  37. Kind_Turnover9691 Avatar

At the end of the day, no leader is above the law . Seeing accountability in action is a strong message for both Brazil and the rest of the world .

  38. Vogel-Kerl Avatar

This is how a DEMOCRACY handles such criminals.

    Make the comparison.

The latest djt should have been arrested was January 20th.

  39. Kialand Avatar

I feel free, I feel hopeful, and I feel like our country just snapped back to the sane timeline it should have never left.

I invite you to imagine the following:

Imagine you’re on a moving train, and the train suddenly derails violently. Miraculously, it starts drifting sideways on the tracks somehow, not yet fully doomed to crash, but not at all where it should be.

Now imagine that after a long time in this utterly horrifying position, you suddenly hear a rising metal grating sound, and as it reaches its climax, everything shakes violently, and you hear a loud, clean, satisfying CLUNK as the train snaps itself back onto the tracks.

    That’s what it feels like.

    It.

    Feels.

    Fucking.

    Amazing.

I cannot understate how good it feels to be safe from fascism.

  40. PM_ME_BOOB_PICTURES Avatar

We celebrated it a lot, it’s amazing that the conclusion of the case was on a Friday :). That guy has been harmful to the country way before he was president, it’s good to finally see him paying for one of his crimes.

  41. Any-Cat21 Avatar

Hadn’t the current president of Brazil also been in prison for terrorism and drug trafficking?

  42. corrupt0rr Avatar

I have celebrated for past 2 days! Honestly it’s a relief, gives me hope but at the same time we know there is much more to be done.

His disinformation campaign destroyed the minds of around 40% of the population. There are still ppl defending Bolsonaro and these people’s brain are melted, logical thinking is impossible, they can barely speak and they get mad at anything.

It’s gonna take so much work to bring back these ppl into functioning form, if possible at all. These people vote so I still worry that Bolsonaro legacy might continue.

But for now it’s time for celebrations, this battle is won but we still have a war to win! Next elections will be one of the most important in history, probably second only to last presidential elections!

  43. Lucasolf Avatar

    kkkkkkk tamo feliz pra caralho!

  44. LucianCanad Avatar

I only dislike that he’s not being tried for the hundreds of thousands dead during Covid, and that we might get his 2.0 version nect year if we’re not combative enough.

  45. Loakattack Avatar

I think 27 is too short. I would’ve given him like a Brazilian years in prison.

  46. Safe-Tip-3027 Avatar

deserved it. Brasil had already a dictatorship during the 60s-80s, and Bolsonaro always glazed the torturers, plus, much people would survive covid if it wasnt him, he went to the us to get the vaccine while his people suffered and died

  47. Sch3ffel Avatar

absolutely relieved, but watchfull as some of his remaining stooges still remain at congress and are trying to pass on laws that shield them from being judged by the supreme court.

but all in all this have being a great week.

  48. Convallaria4 Avatar

I’m so happy for you guys. How did you accomplish this? It’s so hard to bring justice to people in power.

  49. lloc0 Avatar

I had a barbecue with my wife to celebrate on the following day. We are counting the days for when he will be in jail.

  50. SagejdiMeadows Avatar

Turns out jail is a great place for failed fascist influencers.
