As a brit I hear a lot from other nationalities that British food sucks because they went to a fish and chip shop and paid 1 pound and got slop.
British food is actually very very good especially coastal sea food, but most people don’t want to pay for it. They go for cheap take out type British food and then complain that it sucks…..
If you can afford it, REAL British food is actually quite excellent.

As much as I like a good fish and chips, the good food in most of Britain is what they stole from the rest of the world.
I will not fall for this propaganda. I’ve seen videos of brits watching Americans cook and they are like “WTF YOU GUYS SEASON THE FLOUR WHEN YOU’RE MAKING FRIED CHICKEN”
Like ya’ll not seasoning that flour on the fish and chips? hard pass
Having visited the UK over the years British food has really improved. Irish food has not.
Beans on toast is my favourite meal
Every country has good food if you only consider the best stuff… you know it’s a good food country/city when you can just walk into anywhere and you know it’s probably gonna be good, and they have a defined, recognizable style.
I live in the southern U.S., but my brother-in-law is British, and he made me shepherd’s pie once. It was excellent indeed. It was just one meal one time, but yeah, British food is the bomb.
I think British food is fine, it’s just people tend to rag on it because British people like to rag on other countries food.
I did really enjoy the Cornish pasties when I was there and an English breakfast is good too.
I think British food’s peak is lower than most foods so your best is isn’t very high. Y’all have good food in the UK just not your own
As an American picky eater, I adore most British food. And the goodies they have with their teas, just yum!
The Indian food there is great!
I can only comment on my lone personal experience eating British food. Many decades ago in the early ’80s I was a on choir trip that went to London. We stayed with host families.
I enjoyed every meal my host family served. I don’t remember too many specifics, but I remember thinking it was really good. I’m sure of fish and potatoes, “English peas” , but everything was tasty. I do remember that.
They would serve the dinner in courses every evening. I don’t know what order, but something like an appetizer, soup. salad, main course & dessert. I just remember that the whole meal was never brought to the table all at once, but in courses and on fancy silverware and platters. Our (we were assigned in pairs) host family was fairly wealthy from what we gathered.
They also had Tea & Biscuits (cookies to us Americans) every day. It seemed like it was late afternoon or early evening.
One thing I always remember is that the host lady made the absolute best raspberry pie I’ve ever had. It had a meringue topping and it was fantastic.
Australian here.
My experience of British food in Britain was that it was basically just the flavourless moist things my mum used to make when I was a kid. The only good food I had over there was made by people not born in Britain who know that spices are a thing that exists.
Also, there is little to no availability of decent fresh ingredients to make your own food, especially meat. Buying a roast or a steak costs an absolute fortune, and the meat you end up with is abysmal by Australian standards.
British food is fine. People rag on it for much the same reason they insult American food, they’re playing off the memes.
However, I would not go out of my way to eat at a random British food restaurant the way I would some other National Food types.
British food is ok.
But Americans your food also meh.
I have traveled all over the world. Unless you have a lot of money in a few specific cities. US food isn’t better than the UK.
Much love from Australia.
Vietnam, Japan and France away from tourist traps are stand outs in my opinion.
i’ll take any excuse to shoehorn my Spotted Dick into a conversation.
People who say this have never had a good steak and ale pie
More unpopular opinion : If you had to pay more for good foods, your food is trash and Chicken Tikka Masala isn’t British, just whitewashed Indian food
Its pretty good
I’ll agree with you that it “isn’t bad.” Love me a roast with yorkies, fish and chips, sausage rolls, the full English etc. but I wouldn’t call it the most interesting cuisine in the world.
Anything that’s British, including his food is fantastic, I refuse to believe otherwise!
I went to Heston Blumenthal’s restaurant last month, so good!
You know once I had British food and I understood why Gordon Ramsay was so fucking mad all the time
I really like British desserts, those are definitely my favourite. The milkshakes and chocolate are also great. The main dishes, not really my favourite but palatable. I did have some really nice Salmon in Scotland though
Make a list of great British food. It won’t be very long. And I love a roast dinner.
The best part about food in the UK is the variety. Having that empire has its advantages – we have food from all over the world. Not just restaurants, but our supermarkets have far more variety than European supermarkets, although I do envy the meat and seafood options in the Mediterranean supermarkets.
The UK is far north. We don’t have the climate for exotic herbs and spices, so our food is filling but rather bland. Personally I’d struggle to ‘eat British’ every day, and so would my heart and cholesterol.
A sunday roast or a full English breakfast or good fish and chips are wonderful dishes, we are just so used to them, but really they are brilliant, a perfect combination of ingredients.
Not to mention our desserts I had treacle tart yesterday and it was truly delicious.
