Our building was rent stabilized but was set to lose its j-51 rent stabilized status during our lease cycle which is ending this October. Our landlord went bankrupt, and a new company acquired our building during our lease. The new landlord informed us that our buildings j-51 status expired in June on the 10th of July.
On the 17th of July we received a lease renewal agreement 55% above what we paid last year. They were required to give us a 90 day notice due to our time in the apt, but 90 days from July 17th is October 15th, which is after our lease would officially start on October 1st.
Do we have any grounds to stand on to fight this increase either because it is excessive or because they did not give proper notice?
