You get so much better spread using the back of a spoon vs. any knife I’ve ever used. I haven’t used a knife to butter bread in years and when I see others do it, it hurts.

Just checking if you actually are aware which end of the knife you’re supposed to use!?
I mean.. you aren’t wrong at all
With butter it honestly doesn’t matter unless you’ve failed to soften it at all and are buttering directly out of the fridge.
Cream cheese, though? Cream cheese spoon is SO much better than cream cheese knife.
Also peanut butter. I converted 2 years ago, and I regret nothing.
I used a spoon rather than a knife for spreading icing on cupcakes/biscuits. It works better for me.
I’ve used a spoon when I’ve run out of knives and it’s awful, it does not spread nicely, and is harder to get the last of the butter off the spoon without manipulating it around in a multiple directions vs knife where I can just wipe it flat on the edge of the bread, flip and do it again, and done.
I’d use a steak knife before it’s use a spoon for butter.

nah, this is stupid.
Upvoting because I think this is unpopular, but I’m also completely with you. If there are no knives handy, I’ll gladly make use of a spoon and remind myself how well it glides through butter. I swear it makes it more spreadable as it goes!
You aren’t allowed to have anything sharp or pointy are you?
Be a rebel and use a fork!
I think it depends on a couple of factors:
if the knife is pointy like a steak knife, since the end of the knife is thinner and thinner, it is a bit frustrating.
if you are spreading butter which isn’t soft, like during winter, you’re gonna have a much harder time with the spoon.
if you could pick-up the spread on the backside of the spoon, it does spread well, but a spoon being a spoon means it’s generally harder to pick up the spread on the backside, so for a piece of bread it’s fine since you can dump it all on the bread using the corner, but for a bagel let’s say, you’re doomed.
Thank you for saying this, and if I could agree with you more I would. I only use spoons for buttering bread and won’t have another word said about it.
Upvoted, definitely unpopular
Ok, hold on. I haven’t tried this, but I 100% believe that when you make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you use a knife for the peanut butter and a SPOON for the jelly/jam. Waaaaay easier to scoop out of the jar (please don’t argue this point, we can all agree a spoon scoops better than a knife) and then you just spread the jam/jelly with the back of the spoon how OP is suggesting
A very unpopular opinion indeed.

>when I see others do it, it hurts.
If that’s even vaguely true you need help.
Butter with a knife. Mayo with a spoon. Peanut butter goes either way depending on what you’re putting it on.
This is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen on this sub
This is correct. I’ve worked in a few kitchens, pretty consistently spoons have been used to butter bread.
100% this is the way. Is this Unpopular? Half the people I’m sat with at work already know about it and use the technique. A butter knife is good but a spoon is best. Great post
I fully concur. It also decreases the chances of tearing the bread when spreading.
25 years in the restaurant business and every single joint I’ve worked in uses spoons for spreading if a spreader isn’t available. It’s a extremely common practice.
If it’s soft enough, then I absolutely agree
Do you take a scoop of butter with the spoon? That being the case, how do you transfer it to the bread? I can see the spreading angle alright, but trying to get it from the spoon to the bread would be tricky, if not destructive.
The spoon works for putting peanut butter on ritz crackers. Other than that you’re wrong.
I’ve worked in catering most of my life – this is just how it’s done
Of course, just like eating soup with a fork is better than a spoon
Once you try it, you’ll understand why it’s superior
This is actually what I do!
It is much better, easier to soften up hard butter as well
A butter knife is so much easier, but I’ll use a spoon if I already have one. Why clean two utensils?
Spoons are superior spreading utensils in every way
Butter temp is more important than the utensil. But I agree, butter outta the fridge for about 10 minutes and a spoon is the way to go.
