Buying a physical video game or Blu-ray should include the digital version too.

Sure, companies might lose some money, but physical copies should just be priced higher than digital ones, maybe $10 more. That way, you’re paying for the physical product and still getting access to the convenience of digital.

Some actually do, and it has been like that for over a decade

This was my biggest complaint about the Switch. Not sure if it’s changed in the last 4-5 years as my daughter doesn’t play it much anymore.

Bring back physical pre-order merch perks!

Pretty much every blu-ray I’ve bought for 10-15 years has been packaged with the digital version. For the ones that aren’t you can scan via Fandango At Home/Vudu and purchase for an additional $5. The movies that aren’t available just don’t have the digital version out there.

I would be more interested in e-books being packaged with physical books.

This is the least unpopular opinion I have seen in a good while.

Everyone except games creators/sales would agree with you

  7. AverageKaikiEnjoyer Avatar

This is a relatively common thing for physical music releases, at least. Artists like Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding have (at least for certain albums) included a download code in the record sleeve.

  8. Living_North_4231 Avatar

This opinion is only unpopular among video game publishers.

  9. Jirasik Avatar

This seems only an unpopular opinion for the companies actually making the game/movie

Is there DRM that stops ripping Blurays to a computer? Because used to be that you got a digital copy of a DVD if you just stuck it in your computer and ripped it, same for music CDs. Though obviously Blu-Ray drives are different hardware that’s not as common

  11. Dismal_Calendar49 Avatar

The only problem with that is i a can buy the physical copy of the media. Download the digital to keep forever then return the physical the next day for a full refund….I’ve done it before.

  12. Ravioko Avatar

Don’t MOST Blu-Ray come with digital copies of the movie? And also a DVD copy?

  13. HeavyDT Avatar

I feel like most do these days. Still a few that don’t but the norm now is to include the digital version as a code as well. Many even include multiple versions of the movie like a blue ray, 4k blur ray and the digital code so you technically get 3 copies of the movie which is dope.

  14. Winter_Parsley_3798 Avatar

How old are you? They used to do this.

  15. neuroso Avatar

Video game disc should have the entire game not just half of it then you need to download 60 more gigs on release day

  16. majesticSkyZombie Avatar

I disagree, because I think people would use it to pirate and then developers would make the physical copy nothing but a disk with a code on it.

  17. aidocore Avatar

The physical game or Blu-Ray are digital.

  18. arix_games Avatar

Witcher 3 did (at least for PC)

  19. DrPorkchopES Avatar

Many do but I’d argue what’s the point? You’re buying physical so you can actually own it and avoid a hefty download onto your device, so why bother with a digital copy?

  20. Baron-Von-Mothman Avatar

That should be standard across the board and there’s really no way that a company loses money off of a digital copy. It could be very easily coded per purchase like what they did with the call of duty modern warfare remaster. I agree with you, it should be a thing. It became extremely standard with DVDs and blu-rays for quite a while but I think since the popularity of physical media started dying off that extra step started dying with it

  21. thelonliestdriver Avatar

Is this not a thing anymore? I havent bought a physical game in years but they pretty much always used to include a code for the digital copy inside the jewel case

  22. Cube2D Avatar

My guess is that the flooding of the market of said game would devalue every copy, thus the Devs would love millions. Way more than you think!

If they did this with GTA6 you’d see the game on vinted for like £12 a month after release lol

  23. ryanCrypt Avatar

But that would nearly double the delivery and fulfillment cost.

Edit: Nevermind. Found out digital assets are free to reproduce.

    I agree 100%

  25. AttackCr0w Avatar

    Blu-Rays are digital.

  28. bangbangracer Avatar

Yeah, but I feel like this brings up the issue of used game sales and ownership of the license.

I want piracy of software to be legal after a 7 year passage of time from the original digital release of said software.

  32. Baron-Von-Mothman Avatar

You know they don’t lose money on used games….they already made their money off your purchase…..
