Can cops or ex cops access regular peoples information?

r/

To make this super specific, I work for a bunch of ex cops. I’m wondering if they can, or through acquaintances still in the force, look up my information? I was a victim of a crime a few years ago that went to trial and I’m wondering if they can find out somehow, or find out that I had a roadside prohibition a decade ago. Stuff like that

They can but it risks both them and the friend getting in serious criminal trouble

They can, but it is a criminal action, and also against agency policy.

If it went to trial it’s all public record, so, yes they can look it up but so can anyone with $5 and a ride to the courthouse.

They can’t use police resources to look something up for you, but they probably have a better idea of what is public information and where to find it than most.

Legally, no. I am a former cop and the only way I could get that information would be to call a friend who still is working as a cop. If a friend did that for me it would be illegal since the information was not accessed for lawful purposes.

Has it happened before? Yes, and technically the police departments that employ a cop who does that can lose their ability to access that data which would make it impossible to run an effective police dept. Police depts don’t take that shit lightly.

    Legally NO

If it’s public record in your state anyone can. If it’s not public record cops can but if they do it without a valid reason they face criminal / civil / administrative liability. So would be real stupid of them to.

Technically and literally, yes. Ethically and legally, no.

Active POs can run regular people, celebrities, politicians, anyone in the US.

They won’t do it for that reason, but they could. Plus that stuff you’re looking for is most likely a few google searches away

They can, but you are not legally allowed to just look people up for fun or curiosity.

RCMP Audits the use of the Canadian Police Information Center and all searches are logged. So any former police or current police will not risk a breach of trust or other criminal charges to look up Information as a favour for someone.
