‘Can I speak to your manager’ Is one of the best things to hear in a customer facing role

r/

Its almost always a full net positive

I feel like a lot of people who say it or people new to the workplace think its the worst thing you can hear and its going to ruin the workers day, in reality its fantastic.

I dont want to interact with an annoyed customer, 90% of the time its nothing to do with what you have done anyway and more a policy or an unreasonable request you cant possibly help them with

Hearing these words mean you can pass this person to someone else to interact with: Its glorious and frankly what a manager is meant to be there for. I dont care if the customer gets some win from the company or gets told they are right when they are not, im no longer interacting with them.

If your manager is good they will have your back and give your reassurance afterwards, if they are bad and pull you up then they would have just moaned about something else regarding your work day anyway

It’s delightful to me because usually I am the most senior person at work. None of the people asking for a manager want to continue talking to me. They’re stuck with it. It’s so funny.

I think we would all agree

100% agree, wouldn’t say it’s an unpopular opinion

    Yeah… as long as you have a good manager it’s a win-win.

90% of the time when I worked in retail this would be followed by my manager telling the customer the exact same thing I’d just said. Then sometimes the customer would leave in a huff. It would’ve been easier if they walked off in a huff earlier.

As a department head, I tell my staff to proactively offer to get a manager if things are going poorly. Patron being an asshole for no reason? “Let me get my manager for you; they can help you with this.” It’s my job to deal with shitheads, it’s not the front line staffs’ jobs to be punching bags.

I’ve had jobs where getting a manager was like the LAST possible solution and only for DIRE circumstances or else you got in trouble (call centers). It was horrible because you’re getting abused by the customer for denying them a manager and then later abused by a manager who didn’t want to deal with it. No idea what those managers did other than be douchebags about being a minute late from a 30 minute lunch. Never again.

I hate it because I have to call and wake them up at like 3am just so they can tell the customer the same shit I already told them. I did fake a call once, and I’m fairly proud of getting away with that.

I can understand why a daymanoid would enjoy it though.

It can also be fun when they ask for that and you can honestly reply with, “I am the manager.”
