My parents are divorced and I have lived with my mom for almost 2 years now, and I don’t contact my bio dad often. I would like to clarify that none of these arrangements have been changed in my parents custody agreement. I turn 18 in January of 2026 and would like to remove my dad from receiving school emails and remove him as an emergency contact. I emailed my counselor and she forwarded my email to the registers and my mom, (my mom also supports this) The school said when I turn 18 I can’t take him off becuase he’s my biological dad and listed on my birth certificate? They also said that I would need to get a court ordered document stating why im taking him off. However FERPA says that if im not dependent on his income he doesn’t need to he notified that I requested to take him off and that it doesn’t give him the right to be listed as a contac? I just want to know if once I turn 18 can I just re-contact the school and ask? Or do I need to take the extra steps to fully remove him from any legal documents?
