I recently signed a Lease for a condo under a small realtor LLC called Parry Holdings. After reading through the entire lease and signing it I was to pay my first months rent. I noticed there was a whopping $9.99 service fee through their rental portal (2.99% of total rent if credit card is used or $38). I went to my landlord and inquired about this since it was never mentioned in the lease and he said that the fee is not waiveable and it is a service fee through the site for the rentals portal. I have been having to pay this as if I don’t and miss rent, I receive a $50 late fee per day.
I have never rented from a place where their own portal charges a almost $10 service fee. I can maybe remember a $2.99 fee but $9.99 is ridiculous for each month. Is there anything I can do to avoid this?

Write them a check instead of using the online portal. Most banks will also have a free check service if you don’t have a checkbook, you can log into your bank and have them issue a check to your landlord. You will need to learn how long it takes so you can be on time each month.
