I was given some citations on Tuesday and want to get this process rolling. The court date on the citations in early September.
My income is around $57,000 but I have two kids, live paycheck to paycheck.
If I don’t qualify for a public defender can I still choose to be represented by one and make payments for their service? How does all of this work?
Never had legal troubles before so this is all new. Thank you.

You will only be able to be represented by the PD if you qualify and if these were criminal citations, which is unclear here. The court will have you fill out a financial affidavit at your next court date and the judge might ask you some questions. If you don’t qualify, you’ll have to find a private defense attorney. They often deal with people who are in a financial pinch, so many offer payment plans with a good chunk upfront
Are these traffic offenses? Misdemeanors? What, exactly?
