Can’t work remotely because I don’t have kids or responsibilities, apparently

r/

I’m 25M. Only graduated from university last year

During university, I got a placement at this IT company, worked there 18 months. Full time in the office and everyone else 3 days per week working from home.

That’s cool I’m the student. I accept that

Shortly after graduation, last summer, my boss offered me my job back. Started again finally in October 2024

My boss promised me 2 days WFH. Then a while later said 1 day a week starting in February 2025

He said nothing after that. Nothing about it.

So I was waiting until my 6 month probation was up in April

He didn’t have the probation in April

It’s not until June where I spoke up and asked him, ‘whats the status with my WFH’? Am I meant to WFH soon?

Then he had the probation meeting (?)

This is where he told me that I will get WFH ‘eventually’ and he knows it ‘not fair’ but he said:

“You know, you don’t have any responsibilities, any kids, you live on your own (yes because I moved to this city for the job) and being in the office is ‘good for you ‘

You’re a ‘good presence for us in the office’

He said this very nervously, my boss cannot communicate well at all

I was insulted by this, but smiled throughout it for the sake of the paycheck

I don’t mind the job and my role, but I am left a bit bitter by this whole thing

I moved up here and hour away from my hometown, earn the base £25K salary, pay rent, travelling to work and lunches etc and I get this

I found some non-IT admin jobs I have already applied for which can be a stop gap for a while.

It’s funny my boss has been super nice after this whole altercation. I don’t believe it

What would you do?

My boss knows I am quiet and don’t say much. But lately I’ve became more outspoken

I feel like he’s saying the September thing so I forget about it and never mention it again

I checked my contract and WFH is not there, despite it being company police since 2020

Every single employee works from home, but me

And yes I’m the youngest in the business/team
