I love watching fine dining videos on YouTube. Way more affordable than going to those places! Usually I like the way people react to food, but the one thing I always disagree with is how excited they get about mashed potatoes when they’re so smooth and buttery. No!!
Chunky is better, so there are bits of real baked potato to mush in your mouth and soak up the other food. Plus too buttery hurts the throat and makes it harder to eat all of the dish.

there’s something medically wrong with you
It depends on the dish as a whole, because you’re talking about “soak up other food”.
If the potato is there for the sake of complimenting other ingredients, yeah a lot of people leave chunks of potato in their dish. Meanwhile a lot of “soup-like” dish prefers having no chunks.
TLDR: to say something like your title is stupid, because it’s different from dish to dish.
I agree but it’s a texture thing for me.
Agree for most dishes.
I tend to leave the skin on too.
People always forget we should be up voting unpopular opinions and you are a wrong-en. Take my vote
I like to leave the skins on, too.
It is the same as with peanut butter. Chrunchy or smooth. You have to choose one side.
I don’t like smooth puree at all. Give me something with structure and taste please.
the way I make the mashed potatoes usually they will be just a little bit chunky becasue I’m not mashing for too long.. but something that I can not get behind tho are the rustic / country style mashed potatoes with the skin in there.. people who make them this way are just too lazy to actually peel the potatoes which is the hardest part of preparing them.. so they act like it is some kind of special style for the food.. it’s not good.. maybe a little bit is ok.. like 10% skin left on max
How does too much butter hurt your throat 🤔 tf
Nah. You do you on that.
When I make mine that shit needs to be as nearly lump free as possible. I keep going until I get that silky smooth feel, naturally with a good amount of butter.
If I wanted it chunky and skin on I’d just have a baked potato.
Are you sure you don’t want crushed potatoes instead of mash OP?
Why i distinguish between mashed and whipped potatoes. If its a puree its whipped.
Same. I love having actual chunks to chew rather than patient food.
I challenge you to try a Mediterranean dish called Muthawama. That is the smoothest, most delicious variant on mashed potatoes I’ve ever had.
Don’t get me wrong, I like my mashed potatoes chunky as well, but Muthawama takes it to a whole other level.
not only that, the potato chunks should have the peel.
I dont mind whipped without lumps, thiugh I prefer lumps.
But that baby food version squeezed through a ricer? Ick.
I don’t discriminate. Both are good. Also, leave the skin in too.
Have to agree to disagree. Inconsistent textures are typically pretty off putting to me. I can understand why some people aren’t fans of completely smooth mashed potatoes but I’ll never be one of them. I make these redskin mashed potatoes that are so silky the practically melt on your tongue but just for a bit of texture I leave the skin on. If you ask me, they’re perfect that way
Enjoy your downvotes, you reasonable human spits
My godmother used to make the creamiest mash with lumps through it. best mash I ever had. Include the skin!
I’ll eat both and enjoy them immensely but chunky is
Pomme purée and lumpy mashed potatoes can coexist. Are you allergic to butter or milk maybe? Butter should not make your throat hurt.
