Civilization peaked in the 1990s in America

r/

The 1990s was the best it will ever be. The Matrix basically references this. What we had:
– best music of all time across genres and buying CDs with buddies at the music store
– prosperity
– people of all kinds getting along
– lowish crime
– amazing technology but not so amazing it made us dumb
– excellent movies and going to Blockbuster or the theatre with friends
– real human connection
– relatively educated and effective leaders
– easyish travel but a world of distinct cultures
– cool dating culture

What we didn’t have:
– pandemics
– major wars
– major economic collapse
– social media (awful for civilization)
– mobile phones (awful for civilization)
– technologies that will soon run our lives and are already making us dumber

I’m not seeing it get better than what we had…

Bro doesn’t know what the Gulf War is

While it may be unpopular, it’s because sometimes the truth hurts.

You should have seen the 23 years of peace after Augustus defeated all of his rivals.

A very pleasant period for the middle and upper classes of a geographically local part of the world.

90s hip hop is great. The rest of the music fucking sucks

nah… i would argue it peaked in the 1950s. they had every opperturnity to keep up with the times, but it didnt. i dont care about the cultural acheivements of the USA, it was made by the rich, for the rich.

they should have kept up the minimum wage increases, they should have adopted some basic basic socialist measures that every other nation did, and kept the inequality of wealth very low.

if they had, im fairly certain they could have had a much more stable economy, with a much higher GDP as well. it should have had a GDP per capita equal to that of singapore or luxembourg. not to mention the highest general quality of life anywhere.

And yet again people who really don’t understand history really shows here

    – Major Wars.

The former Yugoslavia republics would like to have a word with you.

A bunch of Gulf War vets would like too as well.

Let’s not forget the wars in the former USSR republics too.

I’m not even scratching the surface on this one.

    – Pandemics

Do you realize HIV and AIDS was pretty rampant in Africa during this time?

    -Major Econmic Collaspe.

Look up 1997 Asian Financial crisis.

Also Japan would love a word with you.. Look up Lost Decade.

    -Social media

Don’t forget that BBS’s and AIM and ICQ and IRC all where around at this time. And there was a “social media” called sixdegrees.

    -Mobile Phones

Funny Cell phones were invented in the 80’s and started becoming mainstream in the late 90’s

-technologies that will soon run our lives and are already making us dumber

Look into history and you’ll see permutations of this argument.

The first Matrix movie was right. 1999 was the peak of civilization.

    > people of all kinds getting along

Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like I’ve seen this recent trend of pretending racism wasn’t a thing in in the 90s.

Instead of upvoting for an unpopular opinion I’m just not going to vote for your willfull ignorance

All nostalgia is rose colored glasses…plenty of problems in the 90s

  16. LazyConstruction9026 Avatar

For all the people saying “plenty of problems in the 1990s”—what decade was ever better?

I’m confused as to how you’re getting half of your positive points from The Matrix.

You can also add “better options for transitioning to another gender” into your “things we have now” category, because I’m willing to bet the Wachowskis would put that in the positive category.

    ?? “Lowish crime”?

Violent crime rates peaked in the US in 1992. They had never been worse before or since.
