The point was to censor the curse words and profanity to underaged buyers. The clean versions were a hard listen, especially with rappers that routinely curse. Someone underaged simply should not be allowed to buy a rap album, and the actual release of the album available only to adults. Obviously on the radio and TV, you have to edit out curse words that’s obvious. Even today I hate looking up rap songs online and it ends up being the clean version it’s extremely annoying

Why would a record label want to reduce their market like that?
Or… get this, maybe let underage people listen to what they want to? In my country all this family-friendly censoring stuff came to be in the last decade or so, many people I knew grew up listening to Eminem, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent or similarly violent and curseful music and it never caused any problems whatsoever.
Like the other comment said; why would a record label prevent themselves from gaining profits? If parents are only willing to buy their kids music if it’s censored, and rap is a popular genre, why wouldn’t they sell censored versions of music? The artist isn’t responsible for releasing clean versions of things as much as labels are.
Why would you say something was pointless then the first 3 words are “the point was”….
If it made the record labels money then it wasn’t pointless. There was a market for it. They filled that market. Whether or not it sucks wasn’t relevant for them. Them releasing clean versions also helped prevent backlash as well. Because they could point out that they had a clean version available. Which a parent might have chosen not to buy.
Personally I’m a parent and know it is pointless because kids will hear more swear words and profanity from other kids than they ever will from other sources. What you can do is sit down and actually explain things to your kids. Not the same with violence in movies and such though. But not all parents are like me. Some parents would throw a fit if they here a random shit or fuck in something their kid is listening to.
I still listen to them in my forties.
Perfect for a party or event with a borderline crowd (what if your brother in law the pastor shows up? Or your neighbors’ kids?) or in the car with the kiddos.
Rap is historically significant art so I do play it with my kids. But I can’t do the language.
Definitely an unpopular opinion.
