“I’m a different person if I don’t have my morning coffee.” No, you have a dependency issue that society has deemed socially acceptable. Dependency issues from caffeine are played off as just headaches and irratibilty when someone doesn’t have enough but they don’t actually combat the real problem. There is a time and a place for coffee and caffeine, but too many people are comfortable with their addiction and some don’t even realize that it is an addiction. A black coffee every morning is one thing, but a daily coffee loaded with sugar that will make you crash mid afternoon is a different story. I think that people are too comfortable with their addiction that they almost don’t even think about it like an addiction and are quick to join the “Starbucks cult.”

Agreed, man.
It’s not just coffee. How many people drink several caffeine laden sodas and energy drinks a day? Everyone’s on drugs.
Not only that, the powers that be have vested incentives to publish positive articles about coffee and suppress negative ones. It’s great for boosting worker productivity, like nicotine is as well (until that one became too glaring to ignore).
I still wonder why more people don’t question their coffee consumption when they feel anxious, the first thing I’d do if I had anxiety is look at how much coffee I’m drinking.
Definitely a unpopular opinion. Take my upvote.
Coffee has been shown to have health benefits.
Minus the sugar, yes.
But definitely not a cult. It’s been around for a very long time and has always been ritualistic.
Who gives a fuck? Let people do them.
Totally agree.
If you have an objectively harmful habit (to your health be it mental or physical) that results in a net positive productivity -> Society tends to reward it.
You’re workaholic? take more money and praise, and fuck your mental health.
You’re drinking coffee? (which in turn allows you to produce more) -> hell yeah, we’re gonna fill the whole city with it (not that I don’t love coffee, am another addict just like anyone else).
I switched recently to decaf, I’ve felt great since. I like drinking coffee but the caffeine was impacting me. I never used sugar so no issue there. I agree with you, not unpopular to me.
I gave up coffee when I realized that the caffeine had little to any effect in “waking me up.” Getting enough sleep is so much better.
Maybe it’s because my coffee “addiction” is basically non-existent (maybe a cup and a half a day, not even every day), but I mostly assume that people are exaggerating the effects of not having coffee for humorous effect. I don’t think people really mean it literally when they say they’ll die without their morning coffee. Obviously, caffeine is a stimulant, so it gives people a boost, but other than “is less awake” I’m not sure I’ve ever noticed that someone is significantly more irritable or getting headaches from not having a morning coffee.
Im a different person if I dont have my morning weed
It’s all in good humor—something you may not have. Let people have their bean water. This would be a good unpopular opinion but it feels more hyperbolic than the statement you’re criticizing.
I think most daily coffee drinkers would agree that it’s an addiction
It’s just not an addiction that causes serious side effects like most addicting things so it’s not seen as a big deal
Totally disagree. Its only 2 cups
So what?
Rather be dependent on a cup of coffee in the morning than the vast majority of other drugs out in the world
I don’t like caffeine, and I don’t like the taste of coffee. If you sleep well, you don’t need caffeine. If I’m sleep deprived, I prefer L-tyrosine to give me a mental boost.
Yeah, well, fuck you.
As addictions go, caffeine addiction is relatively benign. But people really do become addicted to caffeine and will suffer withdrawal symptoms if they go without.
It sucks for non-coffee drinkers like myself who have wait around for hours for someone to get their daily ‘fix’.
I got full on anxiety attacks a few times from coffee, so I switched to cold brew at home for a time. Now I do tea only when I need a little extra push, which luckily isn’t as often as it used to be. I’m still tired all the time though because of lifelong hormone and digestion issues, and that sadly doesn’t go away with my meds for this condition. Exercise has helped a bit though.
All this to say that I ain’t part of coffee culture, but I do need assistance sometimes because my body has it out for me.
The real problem is that we treat hard work as something good and noble and howninportant toil is. so if course stimulants to compensate for lack of sleep become more important and revered. Coffee is an offshoot of the cult of work
It’s not that deep.
It’s just a humorous remark.
When people say “omg it’s so funny, I died of laughter” they didn’t really die, either.
“I need a beer” also doesn’t mean that drinking a beer is an absolutely necessity, for the record.
And then there’s those espresso perverts
Ok just cause you’re bri’ish and you drink tea, don’t mean there’s anything wrong with coffee. You want to see an “addiction” look inside a modern British tank—they have a way for tea to be made while in the tank.
Three cups are Rookie numbers. I work in finance. I drink three cups before getting in the shower in the morning.
Sometimes people just say things to be quirky dude. It’s not that deep.
I need it and I don’t think it’s cute I think I’m stressed don’t get enough sleep and then I need 2 cups a day
Exactly. Do meth or do nothing.
I just need it to encourage the poop before I leave the house. That’s all. I don’t need it to wake up. My cat does that.
I don’t care if someone has lots of coffee or any form of caffeine multiple times a day, I chug energy drinks to get through night shift.
but I do hate the idea that they get a pass for being an asshole just because they haven’t had their morning dose.
If you feel like shit because of withdrawals, that’s not my problem, if you don’t want to be spoken to them removed yourself from the situation and/or shut the hell up. If you don’t want to talk or smile or act like a human being that’s fine, but you don’t get to be a dick
You drink 3 cups of coffee to function?
I drink 3 cups of coffee to shit more on company time.
We are not the same.
Is this not with everything? Same thing with Celcius or any other drink
I dunno. When I don’t do crack I feel like a different person.
I’m not myself when I don’t have daily food and water. Must kick addiction.
Same with people who smoke weed.
I think, like most things, it’s a question of balance. In college, I’d slam two pots of coffee a day. I was always twitchy and a over-excited and incredibly stressed from it and I felt like garbage. When I decided to quit drinking coffee for a while, the symptoms were awful and I ended up just taking ibuprofen every morning for 2 weeks to avoid the withdrawal headaches. Now that I’m nearly 30, I have one cup in the morning with breakfast, and then I’m good. Sometimes if I’m busy on a weekend I’ll forget to get coffee and remember halfway through the day, and I rarely if ever get any symptoms from not having it.
I think people need to consider the long-term health impact of keeping their blood pumped full of simulants all day long. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 400mg of caffeine per day (about 4 cups of coffee, give or take) as the safe maximum for most people. There is also some research that shows having 1-2 cups a day (or even lower caffeine, like the amount in green/black tea) can promote heart health long-term, but going above that 400mg amount consistently can be very damaging.
You kind of dance around it, but what is the actual downside of this addiction? They get a bit sleepy mid afternoon?
Three? I need five, with a few cigarettes sprinkled in.
Yeah, its a dependancy.
I just like the taste bro. Leave me alone.
I’ll live.
When the “issues” related to the dependancy are so mild most people don’t even realise they’re there, they can’t be much of an issue.
You’re right, it’s not cute I need 3 cups to function. But hyperspeed is a helluva lot more fun.
Better than those people who brag about 3 hour of sleep
Well they good news is that the places where coffee can grow have maybe a decade of harvests left because of anthropogenic climate change.
I love how OP throws in the “but what I do by drinking plain black coffee every day is fine” in the middle of that lmfao
>No, you have a dependency issue that society has deemed socially acceptable.
Every time this comes up, I always pose the question–what is the harm of caffeine? In the amounts the majority of people are using it, it’s practically harmless and in many cases both caffeine and coffee have health benefits. Is it a chemical that can cause withdrawal symptoms if used consistently and in increasing dosages? Yeah, of course, but at worst you have a headache for an afternoon and are right as rain the next day. No one is out in the alley way sucking dick to get their coffee fix, no one is overdosing on caffeine, and all of the complaints from non-coffee drinkers are usually muddied with multiple unrelated complaints because they know that focusing solely on one of the complaints isn’t enough to stand on.
It’s a social accepted drug problem! But the impacts of usage are incredibly minimal and are rarely, if ever, harmful.
It’s loaded with sugar, cream and fat and isn’t even really coffee! That’s not an issue with caffeine usage, that is you having a problem with coffee chains loading their products with unhealthy ingredients, not the caffeine/coffee itself.
The reality is people like to make small talk by overexagerating inconveniences that many people share. Feeling tired and groggy because you had a busy day and didn’t get great sleep, and rebutting a request from a coworker that would require thinking and careful planning first thing in the morning with “I haven’t had my cup of coffee yet” is basically just saying “Give me a minute to wake up and get my brain in motion so I can help you, right now I’m not ready for this request” but it’s just laced in humor with a shared experience for this little thing we call social nicety.
Congrats on getting enough restful sleep that you don’t need a stimulant in the morning, I guess.
Some of us are insomniacs, and some of us have circadian rhythms that don’t mesh well with the 9-5 lifestyle we’re forced to work.
Is it an addiction? Maybe. But it’s also the only way I’m able to stay alert enough to keep a job lol. I’ll take caffeine addiction over dying starving and homeless.
So….
I take it you dont like coffee (taste or caffeine, come on we gotta know, we’re all on the edge of our seats)?
You have a disdain for Starbucks (fair).
You think everyone who drinks more than a cup of coffee a day is in a cult?
Did I miss anything?
I’ll admit i am a little addicted to coffee but I could stop easily. Now Diet Coke addicts are a different story
I was a late adhd diagnosis and suddenly my caffeine addiction made a lot more sense 😅 even with a stimulant prescription I prefer to keep the dose low so I can keep drinking coffee. Nothing beats the warm fuzzy feelings from a nice hot cup of black coffee in the morning.
I like being addicted to caffeine.
I only go to bed at night so I can start my next day with a big fat ass cup of coffee.
caffeine is just a socially acceptable drug 🤷🏻♀️
I have one delightful cup of coffee a day. I have been through drinking 3-5 per day and the caffeine headache if you don’t get it and I just don’t need that. In the morning, the idea of my one perfect cup of coffee gets me up. I feed the cat as the water warms up. I weigh out my beans because I don’t want to waste any. I grind the coffee as my water heats up further. I make 1 cup at a time in a Clever coffee maker. And that first sip? Divine. Can I make it without a cup of coffee like this? Yes. But I don’t want to. Call me an addict if you wish but my one perfect cup of coffee per day is self care and people need more self care.
Twice in 36 years isn’t much, but the next time someone is blocking the road because the line at the coffee drive-thru is that long, I’m hitting them.
You must be the fun person at the party
We have a free coffee machine…
If I’m drinking 3 YETI bottles at 18 oz each, that’s:
3 × 18 oz = 54 oz of coffee per day
A standard U.S. cup of coffee is 8 oz, so:
54 oz ÷ 8 oz = 6.75 cups of coffee
6.75 × 95 mg = ~641 mg of caffeine per day
FDA recommends no more than 400 mg/day for most adults
I’m fucked
Humans discovered caffeine and then they invented civilization. Caffeine is good.
Yea people are annoying
I’ve always made coffee at home and never liked Starbucks. All their coffee tastes so bitter.
I never drank much, maybe a cup or half a cup in the morning but I drank a good amount of soda. When I got pregnant I dialed it way back and then after birth I ended up having worse sleeping issues then before and now have almost cut caffeine out of my diet. Decaf everything now and any regular caf drink is a special treat.
My quality of life has improved drastically. Caffeine is treated smiliar to alchohol. Yeah, its socially acceptable but that doesn’t mean it’s good.
I just don’t drink caffeine and feel great. Never tired, no issues falling asleep.
I will admit I’m a caffeine addict. Before I became a dad I enjoyed one coffee in the morning made to my taste. Now I wish I had an IV on caffeine injected into me just to get through the day. Ugh I miss having a full night of sleep. Maybe I’ll get one in 18-30 years.
I’m just so tired bro
This is why I’ve never “started” drinking coffee , I do not need another addiction lol
I once saw someone take a triple shot of espresso like it was tequila. Still one of the most impressive things I’ve ever seen in person.
I agree, and I drink a ton of coffee. At this point if I have none, I’ll likely get a headache…but still, it drives me nuts when people are like “I can’t start my day” or whatever.
I drink a lot of coffee because I like it, and it has no calories. I have never felt any noticeable uptick in energy or clarity from the caffeine.
I think for some it’s also just an excuse to be a shithead for a couple hours each morning.
I limit my coffee intake to 1-1.5 cups in the morning, and since I already have sleep issues I have a hard rule to not have any after 11am. Last couple times I wasn’t able to make or get coffee in the morning, I ended up with a nasty headache a few hours into the day that’s really tough to get rid of. Sometimes if I sleep really well the night before I can avoid it but caffeine withdrawal is unfortunately very real
