There’s a lot of venezuelan hate in latam. And most countries have beef with their neighbors.

  2. Bebop_Man Avatar

I think most countries feud with their neighbors. It’s almost always about illegal immigration and the effect of economic policies.

  3. SpecialK--- Avatar

A lot of countries in Latam have issues with Venezuelans at the moment. There’s nothing inherently wrong with Venezuelans, but many have been leaving Venezuela and most of the times an immigrant group is big anywhere, it tends to not be positively seen.

  4. Huge-Adeptness-2261 Avatar

Tbh growing up I didn’t hear anything abt hate against colombians, I heard it was bad in the 90s but I wasn’t alive for that

  5. Detective_God Avatar

I think most people who hate us are dumb given that we’re in an awful crisis but Colombians should be given all the freedom to disdain us.

It wasn’t too long ago Colombians were the ones migrating into Venezuela when the getting was good, and they were treated infinitely worse than we are in Colombia.

In my grandpa’s farm I heard horror stories from our farmhands of the treatment they received at other farms, etc. Some real bad stuff.

I’m not advocating hate, but from Colombians I get it. A lot of us Venezuelans behaved very poorly when we had it good.

Coño, I know a guy that thinks aliens captured him from a platano field. You don’t see me taking him seriously. .

  7. CtGuy123 Avatar

Do some Colombians here in Colombia absolutely hate Venezuelans? Yes, absolutely

But it’s more of a general frustration across the entire country with a varying level of degrees and you will find this to be the case across LATAM and especially countries that have received the highest number of Venezuelan migrants.

In this case, Colombia has received millions, far more than any other LATAM country and that number continues to grow, so the hate/frustration is really strong here and part of the daily life.

  8. GamerBoixX Avatar

There is a shit ton of hate against Venezuelans in LatAm, if you think Colombians dont like em, ask a Chilean or Peruvian online what they think of them

  9. No_Detective_1523 Avatar

It’s mainly just the really dumb Colombians, or the really right wing Colombians that hate them so much. Same as in other countries and whichever minorities they choose to scapegoat.

I know most South Americans and Mexicans and even latin Americans have a current problems with Venezuelans and the caravans because if im being honest, some of them have caused trouble and caused a mess on the streets and obviously the Tren De Aragua thing.

At my job i work with a few Venezuelans and Colombians, they are good people and they act friendly with each other

Every nation has their bad apples

  11. paullx Avatar

Colombia hosts the highest population of migrants and refugees from Venezuela, with over 2.8 million people as of January 2024, if everyone in the country hate them, that number would have been much more lower, a lot of people have problems of course, specially for a country that usually did not have massive migrations as a receptor.

  12. ExistentialRafa Avatar

There’s always the talk about the hate against venezuelans in latam but never about giving honorific mention to those countries where this is not widely the case:

    Republica Dominicana
    Cuba
    Puerto Rico
    Most other caribbeans countries
    Argentina
    Uruguay
    Paraguay
    Bolívia

And in some way Brazil and Mexico among other central american countries.

Actually most of the hate is highly concentrated in Chile, Peru and Colombia. Panama and Ecuador to a lesser extent.

An interesting example is how Venezuelans are generally favorably received in Republica Dominicana while most of the discontent is targeted towards Haitians, while in Chile the opposite is usually the case. The magnitude and quality of the immigration are determinant factors, plus the openeness and integrating nature of the receiving countries. This is all not even across the globe.

  13. SneakyWoofer23 Avatar

In Tiktok they say the most stupid crap while their country crumbles 😭

One thing though, A Venezuelan friend of mine told me the government pays Venezuelans to talk good of the country in social media that’s got me thinking that’s the reason of those comments in TikTok kinda sus ngl

  14. mauricio_agg Avatar

Indians and Pakistanis hate each other, Palestinians and Israelis hate each other, Serbians and Croatians hate each other, Russians and Ukrainians hate each other, Chinese people and Japanese people hate each other, Nigerians and South Africans hate each other…

After reading that, it’s clear that Venezuelans and Colombians not quite hate each other.

  15. NapoleonicPizza21 Avatar

Yea many people here don’t like venezuelans

  16. El_fara_25 Avatar

Venezuelans brought disgrace upon themselves voting for socialists and now they want to escape from their countries instead fight for theirs.

Venezuela is the living testament on how an envy-fueled ideology like socialism destroy nations and Venezuelans should pay for their sins.

  17. valpalvalpal Avatar

I’m honestly baffled by how much people hate other countries. I find it to be super sad. I think many Latin Americans feel disdain for other Latin Americans. As a Colombian, I often heard a lot of bad mouthing about many other countries, it wasn’t just Venezuela. I was really sad by how poorly Colombians spoke of Venezuelans when I was visiting recently. I feel like human beings should be treated as such. I don’t know. I really want to raise my kids to see and respect people regardless of where they are from

  18. littlebitbrain Avatar

Hmmm, I will just to speak from personal experience, but it always felt more like a sense of rivalry rather than hatred.

Maybe it has to do with the fact that I come from the Andean zone which is the most similar place to Colombia and has a lot of Colombian presence (even today).

My grandma is Colombian, and I remember I personally asked her how she was treated when she came here, and she told me she was treated well (Táchira). She came here due to the guerillas.

But it’s true Colombians were not treated nicely in General compared to other migrants groups (say Italians, Portuguese, Arabs) or that’s what I’ve been told.

Honestly, I think Colombians are actually very nice if you compare how Venezuelans are being treated in other Latin American countries, and also if you take into account that Colombia has the biggest amount of Venezuelan inmigrants today.

  19. ToxicCharmander Avatar

My experience with Colombians have always been great with a few exceptions where I received xenophobic treatment. But in general, I have nothing bad to say about them! I lived there a couple of years and in different cities, and my brother got married to a Colombian girl. I like their manners, their sense of humor, their hospitality. Honestly, I feel like between Venezuela and Colombia there’s no rivalry.

  20. GlazingStalin Avatar

Venezuelans are being treated like the Syrians of Latin America right now

  21. Mysterious_Sorbet134 Avatar

they are too trad for my taste, it kinda shocks me. i been told that venezuelans are the “russians” of latam due to their tradiness lol

  22. Andromeda39 Avatar

A lot of people make xenophobic comments or are actually xenophobic but like, we have received the most amount of Venezuelans than any other country and it’s just something we have adapted to. I think other countries have been way more unwelcoming

  23. Daxivarga Avatar

Most of my older family genuinely hates VZs

  24. Weekly_Bed827 Avatar

Inside Colombia, where there are millions and not the best types of immigrants? Probably, and it’s understandable.

Overseas in a neutral ground? Absolutely not. I know and work with plenty of Colombians, and it’s basically being cousins as we share many cultural similarities.

  25. Digital_Nomad_93 Avatar

Venezuela and Colombia are brothers separated at birth. Doesn’t matter how much time passes or what exactly occurs. Few countries in the world share so many similarities and history.

Being Venezuelan is being Colombian and the opposite, it’s a shared home. Decades ago, when Colombia was on the peak of the war, many migrated to Venezuela. Nowadays, it’s the opposite, having venezuelans migrating to Colombia.

Unfortunately, the bad migrants are many and the xenophobia expands, now and then. We should always remember that we’re inseparable brothers by history.

  26. HotSprinkles10 Avatar

I can tell you the USA is currently trying to get rid of Venezuelans lol

  27. blackdahlia56890 Avatar

I think it’s the migration that’s realistically what causes LATAM countries to be abrasive in this situation. We are aware things in Venezuela are not great, but coming to other countries in droves(and this is coming from my personal interactions, so it’s biased) and acting like you own the place and generally showing your ass doesn’t bode well.

  28. Disastrous-Example70 Avatar

I’ve seen some old people that hate Colombians here, but I don’t think it’s something that common currently.

Most people have at least a friend or a family member with Colombian ancestry or that is Colombian themselves, since there has been a lot of migration. I have a couple uncles with Colombian ancestry, and many friends as well.

I kinda hate one of my Colombian uncles, but it’s because he supports chavismo lol

  29. mundotaku Avatar

The hate between Colombians and Venezuelans has a long history.

There have always been frictions due to the border, but in the 70s thru the 90s there was a lot of hate for Colombians coming to Venezuela illegally. It was pretty much a clitche that house servants were Colombians in Caracas. “Colombiche” was a common despective term used to describe them and it was common to see in the news the National Guard arresting people crossing the border. Many racists also blame Colombia and other South American countries for “ruining Venezuela” and for “their kids voting for Chavez.”

30 years later, and the coin has flipped. Now is Colombians calling Venezuelan “Venecos” for crossing their border and staying in the country.

  30. Mysterious_Dot_1461 Avatar

We like each other. I cannot say the same about Chileans and Peruvians which a lot of them are human garbage.
    I’m Venezuelan/American

  31. Mysterious_Dot_1461 Avatar

BTW there are 9 million people with double citizenship Colombian/Venezuelan.

  32. Significant_Art_3736 Avatar

In my opinion Venezuelans are generally very conservative politically and like dictator type characters and try to support dictators in other countries which isn’t cool and always backfired on them

  33. isiltar Avatar

So historically venezuelans and colombians have had a rocky relationship, when I was a kid we had a lot of Colombians coming to Venezuela, now it’s the other way around. I grew up seeing a lot of xenophobia towards Colombians (Peruvians and Bolivians too). Now that we had to flee our country I see a lot of xenophobia towards us. I always thought it was dumb, there’s good a bad people in every country and I’m biased because I feel affinity with all of south America, whenever I meet someone from Colombia or any other sudaca country I immediately feel some sort of kinship, specially with Colombians, argentineans, Chileans and Brazilians.

My closest friends are from those countries, my partner is Chilean. Of all LATAM countries I think the only one we still have a mostly positive image is Argentina. I’ve been here for 17 years and have only been discriminated for being venezuelan maybe twice in all these years.

  34. LowRevolution6175 Avatar

They are essentially the same people divided by an artificial Spanish colonial border from hundreds of years ago

But they’d rather argue over who invented arepas and boob jobs

  35. Any-Supermarket-636 Avatar

I wouldn’t say we hate all Venezuelans. The problem is that a lot of them here are robbing peolpe and committing crimes, so colombians are fed up.

  36. AdVast3771 Avatar

I live in Colombia. The sheer number of Venezuelan immigrants in the country is deemed unsustainable because Colombia’s economy is precarious in many aspects: wages are low and informality is sky high. So there’s this perceived threat that such a massive influx of immigrants will deplete the already scarce resources such as formal jobs and social spending. Add to this the fact that Venezuelans are overrepresented among the “undesirables” (beggars, petty criminals, prostitutes) and you have a perfect recipe for xenophobic hate.

I am already seeing the anti-Venezuelan sentiment become the new normal and accepted even among progressive Colombians, something I did not use to see 5-10 years ago when it was restricted to the far right. I believe a hardline xenophobic agenda will become “politically viable” very soon.

  37. PraetorGold Avatar

It’s sad but Colombians don’t naturally hate Venezuelans. Venzes are going through tough times. They are trying to start all over wherever they are and that is very stressful and that can permeate interactions.

  38. Gatorrea Avatar

Colombians hate Colombians and Venezuelans hate Venezuelans 😂 but yeah there’s some generalized hate against Venezuelans all around Latin America.

  39. jul3009 Avatar

I am Colombian and love Venezuelans. I find them to be very similar to us, their culture, food, music taste, sense of humor etc.

Granted, I live in the US so my experiences with Venezuelans are probably very different to the ones people experience in Colombia.

  40. DG-MMII Avatar

    Inmigration, no further reason

  41. Naelin Avatar

All is well until you ask a Colombian and a Venezuelan which country invented the arepas. Favourite pastime of mine when I worked at a call center full of people from both countries.

PS: Don’t ask an Argentinian and an Uruguayan who invented… anything attributed to one of the two

  42. Fingerhut89 Avatar

Colombians and Venezuelans have ALWAYS had neighbourly beef.

In the 80s and 90s was because Colombians were coming to Venezuela. Now is the other way around.

But outside social media and our constant fight for who makes the best arepas, no one cares

In fact, I’d say we are very similar in many cultural aspects.
