As the title says, I’m transferring cosmetology schools and I’ve accumulated around 500 hours. The total amount required to graduate is 1500. Because of the amount of hours I’ve racked up—they’re claiming I owe 70% of the remaining tuition. Time I won’t be at the school in the future.
I’m leaving this school for a few reason but one reason is that I have sanitation concerns and I was called a slur by a visiting instructor who has returned. She also bled on me and an entire room of students and teachers witnessed both incidents. I was shocked and did nothing at the time. This was about a month ago. So my reasons for leaving are obvious, hopefully.
The director of the school told me I will owe 70% of my remaining tuition if I leave. I’ve tried staying professional through the distress of this transition and my new school has been very understanding. According to several people I’ve spoken to about this issue, they cannot legally hold my transcripts while I am receiving federal student loans.
I know 3-4 other people who are also attempting to leave at the same time and I know they’re doing whatever they can to try to keep us because it looks bad. The conditions in this environment are not good. And this is why so many students are exiting at once.
I’ve read here that another student had this issue and a letter from the dept of education was all that was needed to get her transcripts but I’m not sure of the exact laws or if this applies in my state.
I am not intending to scorch the earth here but I’m leaving because of the hostile and bizarre environment which is beyond my control. Oh and that visiting instructor who bled on me and continued the service after calling me a d*ke? She is related to the director and I have witnesses that this event occurred.
I honestly just want to put this all behind me and as much as I think a school that allows this to sort of thing to happen should be forced to take accountability—I’m trying to leave with my sanity and move on to my new school without more personal distress.
If I have to start all over with my hours, I suppose I will because I know I’m lacking a lot of basic knowledge I should have by now but because I’m part time that was 7 months of my life. Thank you for reading. I apologize for my lack of coherence as I’m deeply troubled by this situation.

You need to read whatever contract/policies you agreed to when you signed up. That should spell it out. Get a lawyer if necessary, although the cost may exceed what you are looking for. Small claims would work if it’s minimal, but you’d have to go back for court.
Also, y’all should report them. All of you. If it’s this bad, you should do your part to prevent them from further endangering students and their clients.
You would need to read your contract. Owing that money could affect you transferring to another school. You could try speaking with the head of the school or getting a lawyer involved. You could also call the health department and make a complaint or whatever agency that accredits their program. You would probably need others to do the same.
